SAFE Member Survey Results
With 40% of the SAFE membership participating in the recent SAFE member survey (see the results here), there is now statistical data that will be used to guide our organization. The newly formed ad hoc SAFE Program Development Committee, will use this information to create programs that fulfill member needs.
The survey gave important insight into some of the demographics of the membership. For example, 57% of the respondents were between the ages of 46 and 65; 89% were flight instructors; 17% were involved with college and university education; and 27% were "other" aviation educators.
Programs that survey participants indicated they were interested in include: a SAFE eMagazine; SAFE Webinars; opportunities for SAFE members to network with each other; establishment of local SAFE chapters; and regional SAFE gatherings. Your Program Development Committee will take these results under advisement and begin the process of bringing these programs to fruition.

SAFE to Publish eMagazine!
With great serendipity, SAFE has been able to successfully raise the needed funds to establish a quarterly digital magazine -- at the same time that the member survey indicated that this was something that you truly wanted. To that end, Mark Phelps has been contracted to edit this publication. Mark has significant experience in aviation journalism - Flying Magazine in the 1980s; followed by tenures with EAA's magazine division, Aviation International News, Dassault Falcon Jet (website content administrator) and now, as an independent journalist and editor working for a wide range of clients. His work in the exciting, new world of electronic media is balanced by experience in old-time print magazines, and the SAFE electronic magazine will include the best of both worlds.
"This new SAFE electronic magazine promises to be much more than a simple email newsletter. I envision it as a full-feature magazine, with top quality writing, illustrations and two-way contact information. Regular content will include: a message from the president; calendar; letters/feedback; an advocacy update (what SAFE is doing for you); activity rundown; and perhaps a member profile per issue. For larger feature articles, I imagine topics along the lines of: techniques for better instruction; business practices to maximize financial success for instructors; 'there I was' stories from you all, and more. I am committed to delivering a product you'll be eager to open when it appears in your mailbox" said Mark.
The SAFE eMagazine, sponsored by Lightspeed Aviation, Sporty's, Starr Aviation and Jeppesen will only be available to SAFE members in good standing. It will be delivered on a quarterly basis to the email address each member used when they joined SAFE. It is hoped that the first edition will be ready in the not-too distant future, so stand by for a GREAT member benefit coming your way.

NEW Location for SAFE Tent at AirVenture ("Oshkosh")
SAFE will be moving to a new location on the AirVenture grounds this year, known as the Education Interactive Zone. We will be in space 35, on James Ray Blvd. (the road that runs from the Main Gate diagonally towards the forums area). We will be just to the north of the entrance to "College Park".
This year the Pilot Proficiency Project (PPP) will be located in College Park, and our new tent location will give us close proximity to the PPP and allow us to conduct the pilot pre and post briefings in the SAFE tent. As always, volunteers will be needed at the tent. If you would like to be a part of the team that staffs the SAFE tent please let us know . If you are a qualified Redbird simulator instructor, your assistance in staffing the Pilot Proficiency Project as a scenario instructor would be invaluable. Sign up here, if you would like to assist. We can use all the help we can get.
This year the SAFE Annual Members Meeting and Dinner will be held on Thursday, August 1st, starting at 6:00 PM. The menu will be an Italian Buffet. There will be beer, wine and soft drinks available. As in years past, we will hold a raffle of some incredible door prizes. Register here, if you would like to reserve a seat at this popular event.
Hope to see you there!

SAFE Expands Member Benefits
SAFE recently added eKneeboard and iFlightPlanner to its list of member benefits. eKneeBoard is a complete training solution that combines full flight and academic courses with the power of an electronic flight bag in a single app. Moving map navigation over geo-referenced VFR and IFR charts, weather briefing tools, and flight planning and filing have been integrated with flight review courses, G1000 courses, and a complete line of certification courses for the iPad. eKneeBoard also allows pilots to browse FAA training handbooks, the FAR/AIM, flight maneuvers, videos, and more. Users can download ground study courses to improve or upgrade their flying as an in-app purchase as well.
iFlightPlanner features a web-based Flight Wizard to help pilots intuitively plan routes with interactive weather overlays, retrieve FAA-certified weather briefs, and file VFR, IFR, and ICAO flight plans. iPad users can sync their flights wirelessly with iFlightPlanner for seamless, on-the-go cockpit functionality with a GPS-enabled moving map over geo-referenced VFR and IFR charts. Additional features include the ability to save and use custom waypoints, an integrated weight and balance calculator, and the functionality to export detailed navigation logs to Garmin or other GPS devices.

SAFE Resource Center
| |
Spring and summer bring great flying weather, but the warmer months also have their seasonal hazards. For a thorough review of what to watch for, see "The Terrible Ts: Turbulence, Thunderstorms, & Tornadoes" by James Williams. The article, included in the spring 2012 FAA Safety Briefing Magazine, is an annual must-read for pilots and student pilots preparing for the peak flying months. Find it under the Weather topic in the FAA Resources section.
Our SAFE Resource Center's Member Section is an exclusive benefit for all SAFE members. To make the most of YOUR membership, take advantage of the wide variety of instructional tools you'll find there. New resources are posted regularly, and you are encouraged to submit your own multimedia materials to the Resource Center.
