March 2013

SAFE represents nearly 700 of the industry's top aviation educators in 49 states and nine foreign countries, including the majority of Master Instructors and numerous General Aviation Awards winners in all four awards categories. SAFE is also leading the Pilot Training Reform Initiative.

Sun-n-Fun is Just Around the Corner
Tuesday-Sunday, April 9-14 in Lakeland, FL

As usual, SAFE will have a major presence in Lakeland, FL next month. Our tent will be in the same location as last year:

SAFE's Pilot Proficiency Project
This year in addition to our display tent, and in partnership with Redbird Flight Simulations and Sun-n-Fun, we will be presenting our Pilot Proficiency Project consisting of  seminars and scenario-based training sessions in the Redbird FMX simulator. The venue for both the seminars and the sim training will be at the Florida Air Museum. View the seminar schedule.

SAFE Breakfast
The annual SAFE Sun-n-Fun Breakfast -- sponsored this year by AOPA, Aviation Insurance Resources, and Starr Aviation -- will take place on Friday, April 12th, 8:00-9:00 AM, indoors at the Beuhler Restoration Center located just north of the Florida Flight Academy. Please sign up ASAP if you plan to attend.

SAFE Volunteers
SAFE can always use all the volunteer help we can get to staff our tent. If you would like to help out by serving for a morning or afternoon session, please let us know ASAP.

If you have experience instructing in the Redbird FMX and would like to help out in the Pilot Proficiency Project, please contact Mark Adams ASAP with the subject, PPP Instructor Volunteer.
Progress Report - ARAC Working Group
The Airman Testing Standards and Training Working Group ARAC continues to make significant progress. With more than half of the industry members also SAFE members, the ARAC is wrapping up work on the Private and Instrument Airman Certification Standards (ACS), and will transmit these to the FAA with a recommendation for publication for notice and comment in the Federal Register.

SAFE believes that implementation by FAA of these recommendations will elevate the training and testing of airman to a higher level of knowledge, skill, and risk management, while  contributing to a reduction in our fatal accident rate.

Charter Member Tom Hendershot Heads West
Thomas Edward "Tom" Hendershot of Littleton, Colorado, passed away at the age of 72 on February 22nd after a brief illness.
Tom Hendershot
Hendershot served ably as the Executive Director of the AMTSociety since 2007. His service to the aviation industry as a whole spanned more than five decades, and his passion for promoting the craft of aviation maintenance was ever present.

He was one of only a handful of individuals worldwide to receive both the FAA's Charles E. Taylor Master Mechanic and the FAA's Wright Brothers Master Pilot awards. In 2003, he was named the National Aviation Maintenance Technician (AMT) of the Year. Hendershot not only was passionate about aviation maintenance, but was also just as passionate about aviation education. An active pilot with more than 22,000 hours total time, he also logged 6,200+ hours of flight instruction given. Hendershot held accreditations as a Master Certificated Flight Instructor and a Master Aviation Educator.

Like the Energizer Bunny, Hendershot kept on going and going. His experience and commitment to quality aviation education and safety remained beyond reproach. He truly represented the crme de la crme of the aviation industry. SAFE will truly miss his wisdom, good humor and advice, and we send our heartfelt condolences to his family.
Update - SAFE Mentoring Program
Bridgette Doremire is New Program Chair

New Aviation Educator Mentoring Program program chair Bridgette Doremire recently announced that "over the coming months, we expect to streamline the application and mentoring process, allowing more functions to be performed entirely online, as well as adding program reporting points for mentor-mentee pairs, encouraging better communications, and allowing us to better serve the needs of our members."

Doremire noted the committee has been backlogged in responding to emails over the past year. Therefore, the program application will be updated to include a short biography of mentor applicants, as well as the best contact method and contact times for
possible follow-up questions. "Don't be scared of the biography request," Doremire said, "we'll have an easy-to-complete template to make things easier for our mentor applicants."

As the refinements are implemented, current mentors and applicants will be asked to review their application/profile. This will eventually be requested of all mentors annually. Doremire noted, "Members move, earn new ratings, change specializations, and offer access to more aircraft, continuously, so this will provide an opportunity to keep SAFE updated regarding everyone's credentials. We will send emails when this part is ready for review."

In the meantime, if you would like to update your credentials or contact information, or wish to volunteer for this committee or become a mentor, please email Bridgette or call 623-282-2341.
Call for SAFE Board Nominations!
Nominations due by 2359 UTC on Friday, March 15th

Every year, SAFE members are given the opportunity to elect directors to their organization's board. Before the election can be held, however, we must complete the nomination process.

SAFE's Governance Committee is now seeking nominations for three board positions. We are especially in need of members who have prior knowledge of non-profit operations, experience in fundraising, and connections within the aviation industry.

You can nominate yourself or someone else provided that person agrees to serve as a director. SAFE directors serve three-year terms, with newly elected board members to be seated during our Annual Membership Meeting at EAA AirVenture 2013 in Oshkosh, WI.

Please email your nomination to John Dorcey, subject SAFE Nominations. Also attach a resume (two pages maximum) highlighting the specific knowledge, skills, and experience you would bring to SAFE as a board member. The board's function and duties are laid out in SAFE's Bylaws.

Nominations must be received no later than
2359 UTC on Friday, March 15, 2013
Raffle Winner Finally Claims Prize
During Sun-n-Fun last year, SAFE culminated a fundraiser with a drawing for a flight in "The LITTLE Witch", a beautifully restored TF-51 Mustang. The winner was SAFE member Ron Vanden Dungen from Canada. We are pleased to announce that Ron claimed his prize last week at  Stallion 51 in Kissimmee, FL.
Lucky Winner
Ron Vanden Dungen

Judging by the smile plastered on Ron's face, he seemed pretty pleased with his prize!

This unique opportunity was made possible through the incredible generosity of SAFE member and "The LITTLE Witch" owner, Jim Goodwin and the fine folks at Stallion 51. But you don't have to own a Mustang to help SAFE raise funds! You can help your organization with a tax-deductible donation at any time via the "Donations" link provided on the SAFE store webpage

Sign up for Auto Renewal, Receive a 10% Discount

on Your Next Scheduled Membership Renewal

As previously mentioned in a communique to SAFE members, we are excited to extend a special, limited time offer to all SAFE members who sign up for automatic membership renewal between now and April 30, 2013. If you choose to sign up for automatic renewal, you will receive a one-time, 10% discount on your next scheduled renewal. Renewal will then occur automatically on the anniversary of your current membership.

This is a win-win for all of us! As a SAFE member, you win by receiving a 10% discount on your next scheduled renewal along with an effortless way to renew your membership from now on; your organization wins by not having to send out numerous renewal reminders, with some members inadvertently allowing their SAFE membership to lapse.

There are two ways to sign up to take advantage of the one-time, 10% discount:

If your membership is up for renewal within the next few months
Simply sign up for auto renewal during the checkout process via our online store. You will see this option immediately to the left of the "Add To Cart" button.

By selecting Yes to Auto-Renewal from the drop-down menu, you are granting SAFE permission to charge your credit card to renew automatically each year when your membership comes due. To receive your discount, enter the coupon code AUTO in the "Do you have a coupon?" field and the one-time, 10% discount will be applied to your order.

If you recently renewed, but want to secure the 10% discount on your next renewal
Please fill out the secure sign-up form for the auto renewal option. To receive your 10% discount at your next scheduled renewal, be sure to enter the coupon code AUTO near the end of the sign-up form.
