FREDERICKSBURG, Va. – A combined safety and paving project in Stafford County will begin this week to slightly widen shoulders and deliver a smoother travel surface on several secondary roads.
Improvements will be underway along Route 612 (Hartwood Road), Route 627 (Mountain View Road) and Route 628 (Winding Creek Road).
When work is underway, motorists can expect mobile lane closures and one-way, alternating traffic. Work will occur between 7 a.m. and 5 p.m. on Mondays through Fridays.
Widening work will begin first on a 3.75-mile section of Hartwood Road between Route 614 (Spotted Tavern Road) and Route 705 (Hartwood Church Road), which is just north of Route 17. Weather permitting, work will start on Tuesday, Feb. 1, and is anticipated to be underway along this section of Hartwood Road for several weeks.
This project is a partnership between Stafford County and the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT).
With these secondary roads already scheduled to be paved this year by VDOT, Stafford invested around $1.25 million in county transportation funding to widen the shoulders by approximately 12-18 inches. This project is included in Stafford County’s 2019 Road and Safety Improvement Projects Bond.
Shoulder widening provides more recovery space for drivers if their vehicle strays from the travel lanes. The project is intended to reduce the risk of crashes and injuries that can result from vehicles running off the road.
Construction will occur in two phases. Widening work is scheduled to occur first, before Hartwood, Mountain View Road and Winding Creek Road are paved later this year.
On Mountain View Road, around 2.5 miles will be slightly widened from Kellogg Mill Road to Centreport Parkway. Winding Creek Road will be slightly widened over 1.75 miles between Shelton Shop Road to Courthouse Road, except for a portion recently improved by a development project under permit.
A new layer of asphalt will cover the widened area to create a uniform appearance and smooth travel surface. New centerline lane markings will be painted for a brighter and more reflective appearance.
The precise widening width will vary along each road based on the location of adjacent utilities and drainage facilities. Each road has two travel lanes, and will remain two lanes after the widening and paving.
