So I am a member of a Facebook group for Theater Arts Teachers and recently a new teacher asked in a post what we’re doing for final projects. I answered and then deleted. Because, in all honesty, few could actually replicate what we’re doing here at
Santa Ana High School
and, quite possibly, wouldn’t have believed me anyway.
Using our UDL framework, we brainstormed and selected eight stories as a class, 2 have to be original, 2 from personal memory, 2 from observed memory and 2 adaptations. Then we made groups of five—2 writers, a director, a publicity manager and a stage manager. week one: The assignment (depending on the role) is a six-page script, a poster, a 3-D set design, and a storyboard. Week two will be a filmed trailer, a program, a cue sheet and a rehearsed six minute play. Week three, the final is a full performance, tech and all, of the piece.
This is 100% engagement. This is Universal Design. This is rigor. This is the value of arts education—empowering their voices, strengthening their skills at resourcefulness, time management, creativity and collaboration.
Oh, and this is Drama I.

Drama Teacher

UCI symphony conductor, Dr. Tucker
providing guidance to SAHS Saints
|
|
The music program had the honor of receiving a lecture from UCI, Clair Trevor
School of the Arts
, Music Department Chair and UCI symphony conductor Dr. Tucker. Students received a lesson on concert etiquette and program notes for tomorrow nights concert. Today’s lecture is just another example of the strong partnership we have with UCI. Not only does Dr. Tucker care for our students but he challenges them to think, do more and more than anything to demand more. Our students truly benefit and grow from these interactions.

Boys Soccer conquer the Hills and get the View
|
|
Night one,
Saints
Beat Mountain View High School, 3-0 for seasonal record of 2-0, in Huntington Beach Soccer Tournament. 2 goals by Paul and 1 for Saul! Night two of the HBHS Soccer Tournament,
Saints
out score Laguna Hills 4-2 Goals by Sergio, Saul, Juanito, Ceasar. Tournaments are a tricky thing. After dominating the HBHS tournament for two days the
Saints
came up short in the morning game losing 1-0. Unfortunately that dropped them out of contention. 1 goal. However that motivated the
Saints
to fight back even harder in the consolation game and ended the tournament with a 5-0 win over Foothill. Goal Scorers Paul, Saul, Moran, Mateo, Luis came up BiG! Also so proud of our goalies Jesus and Jose and their great saves! We continue the season with a 4-1 record and are excited for what is yet to come for these young men
