We had a very exciting month within our Post and we have more activities planned! Look below to see all about our successful and fun night at our Bowling Happy Hour at Joint Base Myer-Henderson Hall bowling alley! It was a great night of networking and some really good pizza and wings! It was NOT a strike out, so we plan on repeating that event again in the future! 

We also had our annual lunch at George Mason University to support our Student Chapter and the Civil Engineering Institute. Because the students move through after 4 years, we have to work hard to keep the chapter active. We are in the midst of re-energizing the Chapter and hoping that our interaction that day will help move the Chapter forward.

Coming up we have our OBO presentation this week at the Army Navy Country Club as well as our joint Small Business Conference with the DC Post AND our 23rd Annual Golf Tournament. We have moved the Golf tournament to May this year, instead of July with the hope of better enjoyable weather, and not sweltering hot!

George Mason University Event Recap

On Thursday March 2^nd, we hosted our annual meeting at George Mason University with the Civil Engineering Institute to support our GMU Student Chapter. We had a special guest speaker, Girum Urgessa, PhD from the College of Engineering & Computing. He showed us some of the testing he and his students have done in reference to blast protection and the effects of an explosion.

We also heard from two of the Civil Engineer students, David Prester and Fernando Rodriguez who are participating in the Engineers for International Development (EfID) projects both here in Virginia and overseas. We learned about their successful water project in San Pablo de Amali, Ecuador from the beginning with the planning of the project thru the Post-Construction Phase and the design of the Rivanna Trail Pedestrian Bridge in Charlottesville, VA to be built in Summer of 2023.

The next trip they are planning is in Costa Rica to design a new water system for Los Andes and improve the water system in Huacas. We look forward to hearing about these projects next year, but in the meantime consider helping us re-establish our GMU Student Chapter and help our future STEM professionals.

The SAME NoVA post kicked off this year’s social programs with our first-ever Bowling Happy Hour. The sold-out event had members gathered at the Fort Myer’s bowling alley, on a serendipitously, warm day (February 23^rd). In fact, it was so nice we had the entire bowling alley to ourselves. But being an engineering organization, and not a meteorological association, we planned an indoor event in the middle of winter, not knowing it would be 70 degrees outside. Despite the nice weather and being indoors, everyone enjoyed cold beers and wine with surprisingly great pizza and wings. No seriously, the food was great. We got to bowl a couple of games and network with colleagues with everyone enjoying themselves. We look forward to hosting this event again in the future and look forward to more people joining us next time.

On 23 Feb 2023, Dewberry hosted the LMP at their Fairfax HQ where COL (USA Ret) Dave Anderson presented “Serving Leadership” from his experiences both in the military and as a CEO of an environmental firm. Huge thanks to Dave and Dewberry!!

Next, the LMP will meet on 14 March 2023 at Arlington Cemetery Welcome Center where we will learn lessons in leadership from COL (USA Ret) Peter Mueller, PE, PMP who was very recently the Chief Engineer at the Architect of the Capitol.
