SAMHSA's Annual National Survey on
 Drug Use and Health

This survey provides insight into  substance use and mental health 
in the United States.

From 2002 to 2016, 
  • The U.S. has had a 135% increase in the number of heroin users while seeing a 533% increase in the number of deaths attributed to heroin. 
  • Marijuana remains the most widely used illicit drug accounting for 13.9% of the U.S. population aged 12 or older.
  • Prescription psychotherapeutics are the next most widely misused class of substances with 6.9% of the total U.S. population aged 12 or older. Prescription pain relievers are the most widely misused psychotherapeutic.
