Surgeon Risked Life to Care for Victims of the Syria Conflict

Working under hostile conditions, Samer Attar, MD, used his skills to save lives at a makeshift field hospital in war-torn Syria.
[1]For 2 weeks in the fall of 2013, Dr. Attar, an assistant professor in orthopedic surgery at Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine in Chicago, operated under gunfire to debride wounds, stabilize fractures, and perform amputations on victims of the country's nearly 3-year civil war. "There were some nights it felt like the screaming never stopped, and there were some days we never left the operating room," Dr. Attar said. Since returning to the United States, Dr. Attar has worked with the Syrian American Medical Society to raise awareness and provide practical help to the injured.
