Minnie Howard Hosts Successful COC Dinner (6/1)
Over eighty engaged parents and students attended the Community of Concern dinner at T.C. Williams Minnie Howard Campus. Parents listened to a presentation on the effects of alcohol on the growing teen brain. Then they discussed scenarios such as, Parents, what do you do if your child is invited to a party where there may be underage drinking? Students, what do you want your parents to say to you in that situation? Feedback was overwhelmingly positive. One parent said, "Thank you for making it fun to learn about a vital topic." |

Support Stable FY2012 Funding for Drug Free Communities Support Program
The collective advocacy for funding the Drug Free Communities (DFC) program at $95 million in FY 2011 paid off, and the program was not cut! Congress is currently working on the FY 2012 budget, and your advocacy is needed again now. The field must advocate for a funding level of $95 million for FY 2012 to ensure that there are enough funds to support approximately 70 new grants next year.
Using CADCA's CapWiz system, fax the sample letter to members of your congressional delegation to ask them to make a funding level of $95 million for the DFC one of their top appropriations priorities for FY 2012. To send faxes to your legislators, go to http://capwiz.com/cadca/home/.
If you would like to personalize your letter please email lhouff@cadca.org for a MS Word version of the sample letter.

Ingenious Ideas (7/21)
Throughout the years, the Multijursdictional Counterdrug Task Force Training (MCTFT) has profiled many people and groups who have had success with simple yet effective ideas. They have found ways to reach parents, collect unused medications, help people multitask and more. After each story aired on a program, the coalitions often received emails and phone calls asking about implementing the ideas.
During this hour-long program MCTFT will take a look at some of these stories and update what has happened since they first aired. The program will air on July 21, from 1pm to 2pm. Click here to register.

Virginia is stiffening the penalties for underage drinking and driving. As of July 1, drivers younger than 21 with a blood-alcohol level of .02 percent or higher would lose their license for one year if convicted, and pay a fine of at least $500 or perform 50 hours of community service. The approach is intended to promote a zero-tolerance drinking-and-driving policy early by targeting a teen's ticket to freedom. |
U.S. Deputy Attorney General, James Cole, released a memorandum clarifying the federal government's stance on the prosecution of those engaging in the cultivation, distribution and sales of marijuana, even under the guise of medicine. The memorandum specifically noted that the prosecution of significant traffickers of illegal drugs, including marijuana, remains a core priority. This would include commercial operations that cultivate, sell and distribute marijuana. |
