SAPCA's Summer in Review
Successful Drug Take Back Day in July!
SAPCA partnered with the Alexandria Sheriff's Office, The Neighborhood Pharmacy of Del Ray, and Covanta to host a community drug take back event on July 16. A total of 320 pounds of prescription drugs were collected during the four hour event! This was one of the most successful drug take back events and demonstrates the demand from residents and the support that they need in safely disposing of unused/expired medications. The Alexandria Gazette did a great piece on the successful event. Read the article here.

SAPCA & ACAP Host their Annual Alexandria Youth Leadership Conference
In August 2016, the Alexandria Campaign on Adolescent Pregnancy and the Substance Abuse Prevention Coalition of Alexandria hosted the third annual Youth Leadership Conference. Youth learned from leaders representing the public, private and nonprofit sectors. Workshops included Leadership 101, Conflict Resolution, Professionalism and Networking, Becoming a Community Change Maker, Teamwork and Critical Thinking, and Budgeting & Money Management. Local boards, commissions and community organizations were invited to meet youth leaders in a networking session where youth were able to apply their recent skills in using an elevator speech, giving a firm handshake and making eye contact when meeting someone new. Representatives from the Volunteer Alexandria, Gang Prevention and Intervention Task Force, Energy Masters Youth Program, Parks & Rec, Project Discovery, SAPCA, and ACAP connected with youth eager to become more civically engaged. The 2016 Youth Leadership Conference was attended by 25 youth!
Parent Involvement in School
