SARASOTA’S LA MUSICA CHAMBER MUSIC FESTIVAL’S
NEW ARTISTIC DIRECTOR ANNOUNCES 37TH SEASON

February 20 - April 15, 2023

SARASOTA, FL., January 9, 2023 - In her first term as Artistic Director of the acclaimed La Musica Chamber Music Festival, Wu Han has announced an extended season of five concerts featuring a world-class roster of musicians from around the globe. Running from February 20 to April 15, 2023, performances will take place at the Riverview Performing Arts Center and the Sarasota Opera House. 
A spectacular line up of performing artists will appear on stage in Sarasota, including pianists Wu Han, Dmytro Choni, Anna Geniushene, Michael Stephen Brown, Gilles Vonsattel; violinists Chad Hoopes, Paul Huang, Kristin Lee, James Thompson; violists Matthew Lipman, Milena Pajaro-van de Stadt; cellists David Finckel, Keith Robinson, Nicholas Canellakis; percussionist Ian David Rosenbaum and soprano Jessica Rivera.
SEASON HIGHLIGHTS
  • A celebration of the 150th birth year of Sergei Rachmaninov with Van Cliburn Competition Medalists Dmytro Choni and Anna Geniushene and pianist and Artistic Director, Wu Han
 
  • Members of New York’s Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center showcase music from the Americas with works by Bernstein, Copland, Chavez, Golijov and Gershwin
 
  • A special program featuring two astonishing masterworks, Felix Mendelssohn’s Octet in E-flat major (written by the composer at the age of 16), and the tour-de-force instrumental duo of Handel/Halvorsen’s Passacaglia for Violin and Viola.
 
  • A special Baroque program featuring a virtuoso display of brilliant string playing
 
  • A tribute to La Musica’s co-founder and longtime Associate Artistic Director, Derek Han, exploring the deep musical friendships between composers Johannes Brahms, Antonín Dvořák, and Harry Burleigh

ABOUT THE ARTISTIC DIRECTOR
Pianist Wu Han, recipient of Musical America’s Musician of the Year Award, the highest honor bestowed by the organization, enjoys a multi-faceted musical life that encompasses performing, recording and artistic direction at the highest levels. Her recent concert activities have taken her from New York’s Lincoln Center stages to the most important concert halls in the United States, Europe and Asia. She is the founder and Artistic Director of ArtistLed, classical music’s first artist-directed, internet-based recording label. Currently Artistic Co-Director of the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, and Music@Menlo, Silicon Valley’s innovative chamber music festival, she also serves as Artistic Advisor for Wolf Trap’s Chamber Music at the Barns series and for Palm Beach’s Society of the Four Arts, and in 2022 was named Artistic Director of La Musica in Sarasota, Florida.
La Musica brings together outstanding chamber musicians from around the world for intense musicmaking, and is committed to sharing this intimate and communicative art form with ever-widening audiences. Throughout its existence, La Musica has collaborated with other cultural organizations, including the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, Sarasota Film Society, Sarasota Ballet, Ringling College of Art and Design, and Guitar Sarasota. Essential to its mission, La Musica is committed to bringing listeners inside the chamber music experience and process through free tickets for young people and audience engagement programs for all.
