SARC Career Development Award
SARC is pleased to announce our newest Career Development Awardee Danh Truong, PhD (Postdoctoral Fellow, Sarcoma Medical Oncology, University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center). View announcement here.
With the SARC Career Development Award, Dr. Truong aims to assess therapeutically targeting the androgen receptor (AR) and the PI3K/Akt/mTOR pathways and their possible role in neuroendocrine differentiation.
Dr. Truong received his PhD in Biomedical Engineering at Arizona State University in 2018. His central focus was developing bioengineered models to recapitulate tumor-stromal interactions and study the effect of cancer-associated fibroblasts on cancer cell invasion. Dr. Truong joined the lab of Dr. Joseph Ludwig at MD Anderson Cancer Center as a Postdoctoral Fellow in 2019 to study differentiation and cell fate in sarcoma. He leveraged his bioengineering and computational biology background to model differentiation and identify differentiation states in varying sarcoma subtypes. His current focus is studying desmoplastic small round cell tumors (DSRCT) and understanding epithelial and neuroendocrine differentiation.

SARC Multidisciplinary Tumor Board
In May the international SARC Sarcoma Multidisciplinary Tumor Board (SMTB) held its inaugural session, reviewing three cases across a spectrum of sarcoma subtypes. View press release.
The (SMTB) brings together sarcoma experts, complementing and expanding the geographic reach of local, regional, or even national institutional tumor boards. The SMTB provides a uniquely focused forum for physicians from around the world to present sarcoma patient cases for in-depth, evidence-based discussion of tumor diagnosis and management of adults and children before or after diagnostic procedures, biopsies, surgery, or at relapse.
The SMTB facilitator is Gina D’Amato, MD, Associate Professor of Medicine at the Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami, where she serves as a Sarcoma Medical Oncologist, Assistant Director of Clinical Research, and Medical Director of the Comprehensive Treatment Unit. Scott Okuno, MD, Professor of Oncology at Mayo Clinic, SARC Chief Medical Officer, serves as co-facilitator.

Sarcoma Awareness Month
SARC is honoring Sarcoma Awareness Month!
Please join us in celebrating the amazing achievements of the sarcoma community, including SARC’s scientific, clinical, and patient collaborators. Each July the sarcoma community highlights the latest milestones in sarcoma research, with a particular focus on the resulting impacts on patient survival and quality of life. Our social media platforms will also showcase several of the leading sarcoma disease advocacy groups, with whom SARC is honored to partner.
There are many ways you can support SARC during July such as, wear yellow to represent sarcoma, follow us on social media, share knowledge of SARC and the need for sarcoma research to grow, donate to SARC. Together, we CAN find a cure!

Site Spotlight
Let's give a round of applause to Brooke Chrisman, our incredible Biorepository Protocol Coordinator at Nationwide Children’s Hospital! Brooke has been with Nationwide Children's Hospital since 2016, starting as a technician and currently leading the charge as the coordinator for the SARC trials. Her work involves collaborating with SARC Project Managers to manage and distribute biospecimens collected on sarcoma studies. How awesome is that? Brooke's role directly impacts future cancer research, and we couldn't be more grateful for her dedication. When she's not busy being a rockstar at work, Brooke loves to spend time with her husband and 5-year-old son. They enjoy visiting family and friends and exploring the great outdoors. On top of that, Brooke recently took up gardening and found a new love for plants. We are so lucky to work with Brooke , and we thank her for her continued support of SARC!

Research Advocacy Council
The SARC Research Advisory Council held its quarterly meeting in June, with several new and ongoing collaborative opportunities to amplify the voices of patients while augmenting clinical services and trials.
The SARC Research Advocacy Council (RAC), established in 2019, is modeled on the National Cancer Institute’s to engage and train patient advocates to become “research advocates” across four key functions: advise, design, review, and disseminate. The RAC convenes regularly remotely and in person to learn and interface with sarcoma investigators, including exciting opportunities to “embed” in SARC’s current and planned clinical trials and/or helping to develop patient-facing research educational programs.
The RAC is seeking additional motivated individuals who are passionate about helping to support and drive sarcoma research advancements, including RAC members in SARC’s current and in development clinical trials and other programs. We would appreciate any referrals if you know of an individual (or yourself) who might be interested in participating; please contact Lindsey Overman at leoverman@sarctrials.org.
