Sign up now for Family Fab Lab Workshops in October

Would you like to use our state-of-the-art Fab Lab and take home a laser-engraved pumpkin for Halloween?
Our Family Fab Lab Workshop program returns in October with several opportunities to sign up for a workshop at Stoughton High School lab. During these October workshops, participants can learn how to use Adobe Illustrator and our laser cutter to make a customized, engraved pumpkin.
Family Fab Lab Workshops are for students in grades 4 through 8, but each child must be accompanied by an adult. The program is free, but slots for these workshops are limited and provided on a first-come, first-served basis. Sign up now at

River Bluff Middle School this year has launched a "Monday Message" – a regular video message from principal Trish Gates and assistant principal Bob Johnson to keep middle school families informed about what is happening at River Bluff. Check out the latest installment!

Sandhill kicks off volunteer program
|
|
Sandhill Elementary School is seeking volunteers to help out in classrooms and to be a positive role model for students through its P.U.G.S. (People Uplifting Great Students) program.
P.U.G.S. is a spinoff of Watch D.O.G.S. ® (Dads Of Great Students), a family and community engagement educational initiative. Sandhill hosted a kickoff for this year’s P.U.G.S. program on September 18.
“Your interactions with the students will continue to build their curiosity and love of learning… The ultimate goal is for you to spend at least one day this year at Sandhill, being a positive role model and providing an extra set of eyes and ears at our school,” Sandhill said in its invite to families.

Fox Prairie gears up for annual Fox Trot; fundraiser to support STEAM activities
|
|
Fox Prairie Elementary School's third annual Fox Trot fundraiser will take place on October 4.
The event is organized by the school's Working for Kids organization and allows students to collect pledges in advance of running or walking laps during the Fox Trot. Recent Fox Trots helped raise money for the school's new playground, which was installed last spring.
This year, funds raised from the event will support STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) related activities for the school. All students are also given a free T-shirt on the day of the event, paid for by Fox Trot's business sponsors.

The nomination/application window is now open for the 2020 Herb Kohl Educational Foundation Awards.
This annual program recognizes students, educators and principals for their great work. Educators can be nominated for a Fellowship, and principals can be nominated for a Leadership Award. Students can apply for an Excellence scholarship or an Initiative scholarship.

3,355 lunches distributed during 2019 Lunches for Vikings program
|
|
Thank you to all who volunteered for the summer meals program Lunches for Vikings.
This summer, a total of 3,355 lunches were distributed over 58 days at three sites.
Through Lunches for Vikings, free, nutritious meals are available for children who live in the Stoughton Area School District. The annual summer
program
is a collaborative effort of the whole community, with our District, city and youth center, faith communities and area businesses working together.

Mental Health First Aid training available September 24 and October 1
|
|
Families in the Stoughton Area School District can register for a Mental Health First Aid course offered through the
Stoughton Wellness Coalition
on September 24 and October 1.
The training will take place from 5-9 p.m. both days at the Stoughton Area EMS Building, 516 S. Fourth St.
Mental Health First Aid, according to the
organization website
, is "
an 8-hour course that gives people the skills to help someone who is developing a mental health problem or experiencing a mental health crisis." The program touches on topics such as depression, anxiety disorders and trauma. Trainees are taught how to apply a five-step action plan to support individuals in a variety of situations.
The training sessions on September 24 and October 1 will be administered by Journey Mental Health Center. The cost is $20. To register for the training, contact [email protected].

River Bluff students busy working on first issue of school newspaper
|
|
Students in Mrs. Bonde’s Yearbook and Newspaper Design class have been building their story-writing and interviewing skills in preparation for the first issue of the "River Bluff Courier."
Students in the class recently practiced asking questions and responding to questions related to a potential story. Students who enroll in the elective class learn skills in writing, editing, interviewing, photography and basic graphic design while helping to produce the school newspaper and yearbook. Watch for the first issue of the
"River Bluff Courier" to come out at the end of the first quarter.

Skerpan named National Merit semifinalist
Congratulations to Stoughton High School senior Briana Skerpan for being named a National Merit Scholarship semifinalist.
Skerpan is one of approximately 16,000 seniors from across the United States who have been named semifinalists for this prestigious scholarship. More than 90 percent of the semifinalists are expected to reach the finalist stage, and about half of the finalists will win one of the $31 million in National Merit Scholarships that will be awarded in the spring.

Kegonsa to host Science Night on Thursday
Kegonsa Elementary School will host a Science Night for their students and families on Thursday, September 26.
The school will have activities set up in different classrooms, and each activity will answer an essential question or address a specific topic such as, "What are microscopes and how do scientists use microscopes?" and "What is DNA?"
The school is partnering with Kegonsa families and representatives from the Morgridge Institute, Promega and MilliporeSigma for the event.

SHS student attends Business World Summer Camp
Stoughton High School junior Anna Lee in June attended Business World Summer Camp at UW-Madison thanks to a local business scholarship. While at the camp, she worked with a team to create a product and show it off at the camp's business expo. She is bringing back what she learned to the school and to its
DECA
chapter.

Spilde to be inducted into Hall of Fame this weekend
Stoughton High School wrestling coach Dan Spilde will be recognized for his lifetime of service at the National Wrestling Hall of Fame Wisconsin Chapter’s Honors program this weekend at Chula Vista Resort in Wisconsin Dells.
