BE A WATCHMAN
Ezekiel was called by God to be a watchman. So, just what was a watchman?
In ancient times cities had fortresses around them to protect them from their enemies. Some were made of stone, and some were made of wood.
Picture a castle with its high walls and towers. The wall was called a battlement which had openings where one could see below, but also a solid wall they could be behind for protection. A person would be appointed to stand guard on the wall and watch for enemies. They would have their place on the wall and would pace back and forth. If they saw an enemy approaching, they would sound the trumpet alarm so those inside the fortress would come awake and be prepared to fight the enemy.
In Ezekiel 33 God speaks to Ezekiel and tells him that he is called to be a watchman for the people of Israel. If he sees the enemy coming in to take Israel captive and sounds the trumpet alarm to warn them of what is coming, then the blood of the people would not be on Ezekiel’s hands.
If Ezekiel did not warn them God tells him what would happen in Ezekiel 33:6, “But if the watchman see the sword come, and blow not the trumpet, and people be not warned; if the sword come, and take any person from among them, he is taken away in his iniquity; but his blood will I require at the watchman’s hand.”
Jesus rebuked Peter for not watching and praying while he was praying in the garden. He said in Matthew 26:41, “Watch and pray, that ye enter not into temptation: the spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.”
You see, God uses individuals even today to be watchmen. They keep alert as to what God is saying and warn the people. If they do not do this then God will hold them accountable. They are the mouthpiece of God speaking on His behalf.
God wants people to repent of their sin. God wants to protect his children, but if they are not warned what is coming then the watchman has failed in his or her assignment. How do I know this is true? When two people from a cult came to my door years ago, I told them nothing. I did not warn them that they were wrong, and I shut the door. Immediately I heard the Lord say, “that their blood was on my hands.”
I had no idea what he was saying so I searched it out in the scripture and found it in Ezekiel. I repented and said I would never do that again.
We are ALL called to be watchmen for the Lord. We are all called to be witnesses to those in darkness and tell them of impending judgment. If we do not do this then we will be held accountable by God.
As a watchman myself, I am writing this as a warning. If you have been lax in being a witness for the Lord, I suggest you repent before it is too late.
