THE APOSTLE PAUL – LESSON 9

FIRST MISSIONARY JOURNEY PART 2

Paul and Barnabas leave Cyprus to go to the Roman Province of Galatia. They land at the port in Perga in the Province of Pamphylia and proceed to Antioch in the region of Pisidia in Galatia.

On the Sabbath they go to the synagogue in Pisidian Antioch. After the traditional reading of the Torah and the Prophets, they are invited to speak. Paul took the opportunity to preach a sermon to the Jews and proselytes who were present. We see in Acts 13:42-43 that many of them followed Paul and Barnabas who continued to teach them.

The gentiles also heard what was being said. They asked the missionaries to preach to them on the next Sabbath. The word spread such that when the Sabbath rolled around, almost the whole city of gentiles showed up at the synagogue to hear the message. Many of the pagan gentiles got saved that day (v. 48).

The Jews were filled with envy and jealousy at the massive number of gentiles who became believers. They began contradicting Paul and Barnabas and even accused them of blasphemy. Paul replied that it was necessary to have preached this gospel to them, the Jews, first. Seeing as how only a few believed while most rejected it, it was time to preach it to the gentiles as they were more receptive.

The gospel now began to go throughout the region of Pisidia. The unbelieving Jews began to stir up animosity toward Paul and Barnabas. They spread their poison to the respectable women of Antioch who quickly spread the gossip. They stirred up the prominent men of the city who raised persecution against Paul and Barnabas and expelled them from Pisidian Antioch.

This did not discourage our two men. They were filled with joy to be counted worthy of persecution. They shook off the dust of that city from their feet. Full of the Holy Ghost, they moved on to another city of Galatia named Iconium.

Tomorrow we pick up with their arrival at Iconium as told in Acts chapter 14.

Do we “count it all joy” when we are criticized for our faith? What about if severe persecution were to come? Anything Jesus suffered we can also bear since He will strengthen us. (Philippians 4:11-13.) Many of the martyrs we recently studied counted it as an honor to bear persecution and death for Jesus. He did it for us.

THE MOST IMPORTANT GIFT

A young lady was in our home today on business. If you know me, you know that I always find a way to talk about Jesus. I asked her if she was a Christian and she said, “yes.” I then asked her where she went to church, and she said she didn’t go to church but talked with her mother about God on occasion. Then I asked her a very important question. I asked her if she was born again, and she didn’t know how to answer me. I asked her if she knew what it meant and she said, “no.”

There are many people just like this young lady that think they are Christian because they aren’t a different “religion”. Sadly, not being a Muslim or Hindu or any other religion does not automatically mean you are a Christian. In order to be a Christian, you must be born again, like it says in John 3:3. Nicodemus had “religion” because he was a Pharisee. He didn’t understand what Jesus meant. Jesus told him that he needed to be born of the water, which is the natural birth (not baptism) and be born of the Spirit, which is a spiritual birth.

How do we receive this? Well first of all it is a gift. You can’t buy it you can only receive it. Let’s see where it all started. When Adam was created God breathed the breath (spirit) of God into him and he became a living soul. The glory (Holy Spirit) was his clothing. He knew no sin until he disobeyed God by eating of the tree of knowledge. The Spirit of God departed from him when he sinned. From that moment on he began to die physically and did eventually die.

The only way to pay for our sin and have the Spirit of God within us again is to pay for it with sinless blood. Since none of us have sinless blood there is a problem. How can you pay for something with what you don’t have? That’s where Jesus comes into the picture. He shed his sinless blood on the cross as payment for all sin, but to receive that payment we must receive Jesus as our Savior. We confess that we have sinned and repent of our sin and invite Jesus to wash our sin away. This is the most important gift we can ever receive.

Today this young lady asked me, “Is it really that simple?” I said, “yes, it is” I asked her if she wanted to receive salvation from her sin and she did just that. She invited Jesus to wash her sin away. That very second that she did this, her spirit was “born again.” It wasn’t a religious experience. It was a relational commitment with Almighty God. She received that important gift. Have you? If not, today is your day.

Just say this prayer: “Lord Jesus, I admit I am a sinner and that I need a Savior. I don’t have sinless blood and am lost. I thank you for dying on the cross and shedding your blood for me. I ask that you forgive me of my sin and come into my life. I receive you today as my Lord and Savior and will serve you from this day forward. Amen

If you said that prayer, then you are now “born again” and have received the most important gift you could ever receive. If you prayed this prayer, then send us an email and tell us about it. Click here

PROPHETIC EXHORTATION

For I would say to you today to be prepared. Be prepared. Be prepared in spirit, soul and body, for there will be many suddenlies happening in your future. Be prepared. Do not think that they would come without my telling you, for I guide my people by my Spirit saith the Lord. Be prepared, for there are times coming that would wrench the hardest of hearts. Be prepared saith the Lord. Open your spiritual ears to listen more than you have ever listened. For this is the hour of great deception upon the earth. This is the hour that the deceiver would whisper words of comfort when I have shouted prepare saith the Lord. This is not the hour to be at ease. This is the hour to be prepared. For had you prepared in the past, then you would have not been caught off guard. Many have been deceived into thinking all is well, but I would say, be prepared. This is the hour to draw closer to me and stay there saith the Lord. Tune into my Spirit and turn off those things that are bringing you discord and discontentment. For this is not the hour to listen to false words from false prophets. This is the hour to listen to me. I would say to you that this is the hour to come apart and be prepared for what is on the horizon. Do not be like the foolish virgins that thought they had sufficient when they did not. Be prepared saith the Lord for the hour of temptation is at hand. I will show you the way and I will guide you through but listen now more than ever before saith the Lord. Be prepared!

PROPHETIC EXHORTATION

The mentality of many good people goes something like this; Hey, I don’t want to build the ark...I just simply want to miss the flood. However, nothing in their life is going to change for their good; UNTIL they first STOP looking for an ESCAPE and START looking for the SOLUTION. We all need to keep in mind that ESCAPE is the way DOWN and the way OUT; But SOLUTION is the way IN and it’s certainly the way UP. So why don’t you determine now to take the solution route; And all the while be getting yourself ready to receive the answer to your prayers? It’s only then that you can fully walk life out in peace; With joy in your heart and a great big smile on your face.
