THE DAYS OF AWE AND REPENTANCE

WATER BAPTISM – PART 1

The Torah had many commandments requiring cleansing by the washing of water as a means of purification. They understood the role of cleansing by water on a personal level as well as the ceremonial rituals.

During the High Holy Days of Tishri 2-9, the Days of Awe, some Jews would choose to cleanse their soul with water, not just their physical body. This period of time was also called the Days of Repentance, a time to make things right with God. They would find a body of water and as a symbol of their repentance from sin, they would be totally immersed in the water. This is what was called in the New Testament as “water baptism.”

When Jesus’ cousin John was called to preach repentance and turn to God, people understood this to mean they should be baptized unto repentance. John baptized many by immersion. That is why he was called “the Baptist.” It symbolically “washed away” their sins so they could follow God in a more perfect manner.

John’s message of repentance specifically looked forward to the coming of Messiah. When the Pharisees questioned John the Baptist of his identity, he told them in John 1:23, “I am the voice of one crying in the wilderness ‘make straight the way of the Lord’ as said the prophet (Isaiah).”

Later when Jesus came to John, the Baptist declared in John 1:29, “Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the (whole) world.” John then baptized Jesus by immersing him in the water. This was not for the washing away of sin because Jesus was sinless. It was so the Father could announce the revelation of His only begotten Son and the launching of His ministry.

A marvelous sign occurred as Jesus came up out of the water. The Holy Spirit descended upon Him in the likeness of a dove (John 1:32) and the Father spoke audibly to Him from heaven saying in Mark 1:11, “thou art My Beloved Son in whom I am well pleased.” (See also Matt. 3:17.)

This baptism announced the “new life” of ministry of Messiah. Our baptism in water by immersion will likewise announce our “new life” as a follower of the Messiah.

No, it does not “save” us. It is our announcement or declaration to the world that we will walk with Jesus. We will discuss more about that tomorrow.

THE GREAT EXCHANGE

In Isaiah 61:3 it says, “….to give unto them beauty for ashes, the oil of joy for mourning, the garment of praise for the spirit of heaviness; that they might be called trees of righteousness, the planting of the LORD, that he might be glorified.” These are awesome promises for those that love the Lord.

First off, he plants us and calls us trees of righteousness. We obtain this title because in I Corinthians 5:21 it says, “For he (The Father) made him (Jesus) to be sin for us, who knew no sin; (Jesus was sinless) that we might be made the righteousness of God in him.” We cannot become righteous on our own. It takes Jesus to do this. He takes our sin when we receive him as Savior and makes us his righteousness. Now that is a great exchange my friends.

It can’t be earned. It can’t be bought. It can’t even be stolen. It is a free gift that we receive by faith. We can’t work hard enough to receive it. God paid for it, and we receive it by faith in his blood shed on the cross and his bodily resurrection.

What are some of the benefits of this exchange besides eternal life? Well, we get beauty out of the ash heap of our lives. He takes our brokenness and turns it into something beautiful. He takes our mess and brings reconciliation to God. Then, when we are cast down with a heavy spirit because of our sin, or any situation that is discouraging, he puts his garment on us; the garment of praise. He becomes the song we sing and the praise that comes from our lips to restore our spirits.

Remember we can’t plant ourselves. God plants us so that he is glorified. He will never allow anyone to receive His glory. He deserves all the glory, and honor for what he has done. It gives him great pleasure to make us into something beautiful and full of praise.

So, rejoice, knowing that God is doing this work in you and me, and that His plan will be worked out in our lives!

For now is the hour saith the Lord. Now is the hour to listen more than you have ever listened. For there are many voices speaking and many are leaning unto their own understanding. Yes, there is much confusion in the air, and only those that hear and listen to my voice will be led in the path that is a sure path. For there are many voices speaking this day that would be contrary one to the other. Have I not said to trust in me from your inner being and lean not unto the voice of the mind saith the Lord. For the mind is easily swayed by the voices that are speaking peace and safety, while the voice of the spirit would say come to me and find rest. For yes there is a wind blowing that will usher in many things saith the Lord. There is destruction and judgment in the wind, but I would say that it has to come to satisfy the payment for sin. My judgment will bring about a turning, yes, a turning back to me. There is an hour very soon that this will happen, for I would say don’t look with your natural eye, for there are forces that are beyond your comprehension at work even in this hour. I am adjusting the wind to bring exactly what is necessary to bring your nation to its knees. Yes, that is where it must come. That is where it will cry out to me and receive forgivenesss. Do not pray against this wind saith the Lord, for you would be fighting me. I am in this wind and it shall surely blow. Many things will topple through the blowing of this wind, for only those that are anchored in the solid rock can withstand this wind. It is blowing hard, and it will produce what I will it to produce. So my child hide yourself in the cleft of the rock, knowing that there is safety there. Hide yourself in me and know that peace is there. Hide yourself in the arms of the ancient of days. Embrace me for I will carry you through this time, but I would say do not fear, for this is all part of my plan. There will be great cities fall in one hour. The sin of those cities has come into my nostrils and has caused me to say, you think you can stand in this sin? I would say, I will bring you to your knees. I will have the final word, and justice shall be served. I would say there are mountains that will fall down and many lives will be destroyed, and you would say surely we are safe in the mountains, but they shall melt in one hour and the safety will be gone. There is only safety in me saith the Lord. Many would rise himself up and say nothing can touch me, but I will bring him down in one hour saith the Lord, for I have the last word. Yes, my children, the time of justice is at hand, so spend time with me to hear what I would say and know that of a certainty that in me you will find your safety. There will be great loss soon, but those that spend time with me will be spared saith the Lord.

Today many folks are facing battles they absolutely did not ask for; But they somehow got caught up in them by surprise. Now they’re feeling unprepared and so very unequipped to handle a battle that is looking totally inevitable. I’m sure there’s some of you who are no doubt engaged in what looks to you like a disastrous situation. Therefore, you could be finding yourself in hand to hand combat; And now you’re fighting a spiritual battle for your very life, your family, your dreams and your mind. However, you must know that heavy warfare will always surround the birthplace of a miracle. So today my friend take hope in knowing that you too are on the brink of a bonafide miracle. You see God has allowed for things to get stirred up in your life...For a reason... And yes, you guessed it...It just so happened to be in this very season. I’ve noticed along the way how these kind of things are sent to help you to get in order; So that you’ll then get to the place where God can use you and to better reveal His plan and His purpose to you...And for you. Don’t you ever doubt for a minute that God is right there with you and He’s bringing a miracle TO you or THROUGH you. Either way God is bringing a miracle your way...So don’t let this miracle moment pass you by...Just because it’s wrapped up in a battle that you did not want nor did you ask for. Oh, but God had faith in you; And He knew that you were the one to do the job; And do it RIGHT. Now be sure to keep your eyes on Him and you will win this battle; IF you can only realize that the battle is not yours but it IS God’s...And always know that nothing is impossible when Jesus comes on the scene.
