THE SEED PART 13
THE STAR – THE WISE MEN – AND HEROD
When Jesus was born a star shone over the place he laid in a manger. This star was so bright it was seen for away, possibly in Ur of the Chaldees, the place of Abraham’s birth. We know little about Abraham and his family other than the fact Abraham was called to leave his homeland and go to Canaan.
There were astrologers in the East [possibly Ur of the Chaldees] saw the star and realized it meant a king was born, the king of the Jews. The wise men put together gifts and travelled to the Jews home in Jerusalem to worship the new king. There is nothing in scripture that says there were only three wise men. There was probably a caravan of wise men that came to see the new king. That is what made such a stir in Jerusalem.
Upon arriving in Jerusalem Matthew 2:2 says, “…Where is he that is born King of the Jews? For we have seen his star in the east, and re come to worship him.” This troubled King Herod because he was the king over the Jews. After calling his priests and scribes and learning that the promised Messiah, or the true King of the Jews, would be born in Bethlehem, he told the wise men to find the baby and come back to him so he could worship him too.
This was a lie from Herod; he did not want to worship this baby. No one was going to take his kingdom from him. He was being controlled by Satan and would put a terrible plan into motion. Knowing how long it took the wise men to travel to Jerusalem, which was about two years, Herod set forth his plan to destroy the promised seed, the King of the Jews. He put this plan into motion and would kill all the children born in Bethlehem in the previous two-year period.
Joseph and Mary were warned by the Lord in a dream to flee Bethlehem and go to Egypt. Herod’s plan was put into motion, but the promised seed escaped. They lived in Egypt until an angel appeared to Joseph to tell him Herod was dead and it was safe to go back to Israel.
In Matthew 2:21 it says, “And he arose, and took the young child and his mother, and came into the land of Israel.” They did not go to Bethlehem or Jerusalem because Herod’s evil son Archelaus was ruling. Joseph took Mary and Jesus to Nazareth. This fulfilled Judges 13:5 that said Jesus would be called a Nazarene. Jesus would grow up in Nazareth along with his brothers James, Joses, Juda, [Jude] Simon, and his sisters. Yes, Mary had other children by Joseph. See Mark 6:3.
Tomorrow we will learn how the promised seed came unto his own and was rejected by them.
