AFTER GOD’S OWN HEART
As we look at two kings, Saul, and David, we see both were anointed by God. They both had their followers. They both had their victories and they both had their failures.
There was one great difference. Saul did not have the heart towards God that David had.
When Saul sinned, which we all do, he blamed others for his sin. It cost him his kingdom.
In 1 Samuel chapter 13 we see that Saul had some early success but often was impatient. He failed to wait for Samuel to do the burnt offering in his priestly role. In Saul’s impatience, he did the burnt offering himself. This violated God’s law. Only the priests could do this. In verse 14 Samuel tells him what would happen to him.
“But now thy kingdom shall not continue: the LORD hath sought him a man after his own heart…”
What is a person like that is after God’s own heart? They spend time alone with the Lord. They live with a continuous attitude of repentance. They look within their own heart instead of looking outside their heart and blaming someone else for their sin.
Most of the psalms were written by David, and they reflect a heart wanting to serve God, and admit when they failed. David never blamed Bathsheba for committing adultery. He took the blame for it and acknowledged it in Psalm 51.
A person that is after God’s own heart will ask God to examine their heart and look for any wicked ways [2 Chronicles 7:14] that they may have committed so they can repent of them.
We all fail, but a person that repents and accepts the consequences caused by their sin is one that is after God’s heart. The one that plays the blame game and does not accept his responsibility for one’s sin is a person that has no care whatsoever in what God says. They are rebellious, and do not concern themselves with what God has to say.
Always have a tender heart towards God. Spend time with him in prayer and in the secret place. Always have a heart ready to be cleansed from sin. Always have an attitude that life is not about you, but about serving a holy God, and doing what is right according to his standards, then you will also be a person “after God’s own heart.”
