  • Phoenix Award Nominations. The nomination deadline is just around the corner for the Phoenix Award which recognizes destinations, individuals, organizations, governments and firms that have made exemplary efforts at environmental, cultural and/or historical conservation, preservation and beautification of tourism sites. SATW established the Award in 1969 to recognize these goals. SATW members can nominate individuals, organizations, governments and tourism providers who have contributed to a quality travel experience. Nomination information is on the Phoenix Awards page on satw.org. The deadline for this year’s awards is June 6.

  • Marco Polo Nominations Deadline is Coming Up. Do you know someone who has given extraordinary service to SATW and should be recognized for that? Consider nominating them for a Marco Polo award. The deadline for submitting nominations is June 1. Any Active, Associate, or Emeritus member who has been an SATW member for at least 10 years is eligible. Past Presidents are not eligible. Any Active, Associate, or Emeritus member who has been an SATW member for at least five years may nominate someone for the award. • Join one of SATW's Affinity Groups. In addition to our Sci Fi book club and RVers group, we now have a Photography group and one for Antiques Shoppers! If you don’t know, our Affinity Groups are an informal way for members who have similar interests to connect online (and maybe in person). No minutes, no boards, no rules—other than being nice. Start one here or email a group leader to join an existing one: Photography Club (Leaders: Sandra Foyt and Adrienne Barille); Antique & Vintage Shopping Lovers (Leader: Caroline Eubanks); Sci Fi/Fantasy Book Club (Kim Foley MacKinnon & Lydia Schrandt); SATW RVers (Leader: Leader: Kit Bernardi.

  • A large number of SATW members will be heading to IPW in San Antonio later this month. We're hoping to organize a photo of SATW members on the evening of Sunday, May 21 at 6:45 p.m. at La Villita, where the opening event is being held from 7 to 9 p.m. If for some reason we can't find a good spot for a pic, we'll try during the week sometime. Board member Jim Byers is coordinating this. You can reach him at jim@jimbyerstravel.com

  • The American Society of Journalists and Authors (ASJA) is offering SATW members a special opportunity to attend their 2023 conference June 13-15, 2023. They're offering a 10% discount code (FRIENDSOFASJA) for members of other journalism/writing organizations, including SATW. Use the discount code when signing up on their conference website. Find more info about the conference, including a schedule here. Find the scholarship application here. Please direct questions to Kristine Hansen, the ASJA conference committee member leading this year’s scholarship effort, at kristinehansenwriter@gmail.com.
