2017 CLASSIFIED EMPLOYEES OF THE YEAR HONORED DURING RECEPTION AND CEREMONY
Santa Ana Unified's Classified Employees of the Year were recognized by Superintendent Dr. Stefanie Phillips, Board of Education members, and other District leaders during a reception and ceremony held in their honor on May 3, 2017 at Santa Ana High School. Each school in the District selected one classified employee of the year. Eloise Sanchez of Davis Elementary, Joe Miramontes of Mendez Fundamental Intermediate, and Yareli Rebia of Kennedy Elementary School were recognized as the District's Classified School Employees of the Year. HIGH SCHOOLS HOLD COLLEGE SIGNING DAY EVENTS TO HONOR SENIORS WITH POST-GRADUATION PLANS
Santa Ana Unified School District high schools recently held College Signing Day events to celebrate seniors who have post-high school college, career and military plans. At Century High School, for example, more than 350 students walked down a red carpet and were treated to a barbecue lunch in recognition of their trajectories. At Segerstrom High School, 538 seniors with higher education and military plans also had the opportunity to walk the red carpet and pose for photos. FOUR SANTA ANA UNIFIED HIGH SCHOOLS NAMED TO U.S. NEWS & WORLD REPORT'S 2017 BEST HIGH SCHOOLS LIST
U.S. News & World Report has announced the 2017 Best High Schools in the country, and four Santa Ana Unified schools made the list. The rankings identify the top-performing public high schools at the national and state level and include published data on more than 22,000 schools. Schools were awarded gold, silver or bronze medals based on their performance on state assessments and how well they prepare students for college. Segerstrom High School, Godinez Fundamental High School and Saddleback High School all received a silver medal, and placed in the state and national rankings. Middle College High School received a bronze medal, and placed in the national rankings.

MACARTHUR FUNDAMENTAL, MIDDLE COLLEGE HIGH SCHOOL HONORED FOR BEING GOLD RIBBON SCHOOLS
MacArthur Fundamental Intermediate and
Middle College High School were honored at the California School Recognition Program Awards Ceremony May 1, 2017 in Costa Mesa for being named California Gold Ribbon Schools for 2017.
The Gold Ribbon Awards recognize California schools that have made gains in implementing the academic content and performance standards adopted by the State Board of Education. In addition, both schools received an additional award for being Title I Academic Achieving Schools.

SUPERINTENDENT RECORDS VIDEO MESSAGE FOR SAUSD COMMUNITY ABOUT McFADDEN'S NEW MATH/STEM BUILDING
A new Math and STEM building and an outdoor learning space are now open at McFadden Intermediate School. Superintendent Dr. Stefanie Phillips has filmed a new video message for the Santa Ana Unified community about the importance of providing modern classrooms for our students, like those opening at McFadden. "We are steadily trying to keep our facilities up-to-date and fresh with technology and the best learning environments possible," she said in the video. "Our students deserve it and we want them to be prepared." To watch it, click here.

MIDDLE COLLEGE STUDENTS RAISING FUNDS FOR CHARITY DURING OC HALF MARATHON ON SUNDAY
Students from Middle College High School have formed a charity running team that will participate in the OC Half-Marathon on Sunday to raise funds for clean water projects in Africa. Wizards For Water are aiming to collect $4,000 for Team World Vision, which provides clean water, nutritious food, medical care, and more to communities around the world. The team is less than $100 away from meeting its goal. Forty-four students are listed on the team roster, and every student has raised a donation so far, from $5 to over $500. WILLARD STUDENTS INTERVIEW FILMMAKERS AT NEWPORT BEACH FILM FESTIVAL
Students from The Willard Weekly, a news and entertainment show for the Willard Intermediate community, were invited to a red carpet screening at The Newport Beach Film Festival last week. Students had the opportunity to record and interview filmmakers for the school show at the Lido Theatre in Newport Beach. In addition, 100 Willard students went on a field trip to Island Cinemas to watch short films made by students. The school was connected with the festival through its participation in Turnaround Arts: California, a national public-private partnership that leverages the arts to help schools. ARMY NATIONAL GUARD TROPHY PRESENTED TO GODINEZ BOYS SOCCER TEAM
The 12th Annual MaxPreps Tour of Champions presented by the Army National Guard recently traveled to Godinez Fundamental High School, where the boys' soccer team was recognized for its high national ranking, and for winning a state championship. The team was presented with a trophy during a lunchtime pep rally, which was attended by about 1,000 students, parents, coaches, administrators and community members. 4TH ANNUAL WELLNESS CONFERENCE HELD AT SANTA ANA VALLEY HIGH SCHOOL
High School Inc. and Santa Ana Valley High School hosted the 4th annual Wellness Conference on April 28, 2017; this year's theme was Health and Happiness. The day-long event was a full professional conference with keynotes, eight different industry relevant rotations/presentations and a closing panel. Because Valley continues to expand the High School Inc. program, every Healthcare Academy student in grades 9-12 was able to participate, totaling over 280 attendees. With more than 32 industry professional business partners speaking/participating as well, it was certainly one for the books!

KENNEDY FAMILIES EXPERIENCE LIVE THEATER FOR THE FIRST TIME

and 10 parents
from
Kennedy Elementary School
attended their first live theater performance at the Renee and Henry Segerstrom Concert Hall. Students were excited to see the "Carnival of the Animals" performance, in which zoo animals came to life with the Bob Brown Puppets. Special thanks go to the school's music teacher

for arranging this great free opportunity through the Pacific Symphony.

NEW SAUSD PARENT VOICES VIDEO INTERVIEW: LAURA BALL OF FRANKLIN ELEMENTARY
Every week, SAUSD-TV is debuting a new chapter in our SAUSD Parent Voices video series, in which Santa Ana Unified parents share their thoughts on what makes their child's school special. This week we bring you an interview with Laura Ball, a medical student whose son attends Franklin Elementary. "It has been my stability, it has been mine and my son's safety net," she said of the school. "Not only is this a place of education, but my son has excelled here." Click here to watch the video.
