2019 EDUCATORS OF THE YEAR NAMED
Santa Ana Unified School District representatives made surprise visits to the District's 2019 Educators of the Year on February 20, 2019, handing out balloon bouquets and accolades to each one. Board of Education President Valerie Amezcua, Superintendent Stefanie P. Phillips, Ed.D., and members of the Superintendent's Cabinet recognized recipients in the company of excited students and staff. Congratulations to the following Santa Ana Unified employees, who will be honored at the District's Educators of the Year Reception/Ceremony on May 1, 2019. SPEECH AND DEBATE STUDENTS COMPETE AT HARVARD UNIVERSITY
Students from the Santa Ana Unified Speech and Debate program, which is supported by the Santa Ana Kiwanis Club, traveled to Harvard University this week for a competition. In addition to showcasing theirs skill on stage, participants met with SAUSD alumni, visited the JFK Presidential Library, the Holocaust Memorial, Sanders Library and the site of the Boston Massacre. Congratulations to the following students who placed in the competition: Amy Estrada, 9th grade student at Century High School; Ashley Arce, 12th grade student, Gillian Palacios, 10th grade student, and Destiny Ceja, 9th grade student, all at Santa Ana High School; and Isabella Guerra, 8th grade student at Advanced Learning Academy. DEADLINE EXTENDED: BOARD SEEKS TO FILL SEATS ON BOND OVERSIGHT COMMITTEE
The Board of Education for the Santa Ana Unified School District seeks applications to fill a total of seven seats on the Bond Oversight Committee. The purpose of the Bond Oversight Committee is to oversee the expenditure of Measure I funds and to communicate its findings to the Board and the public in order to promote the proper expenditure of school bond funds as voters intended and the efficient completion of projects. All applicants must be at least 18 years of age, a resident of California, and reside within the district's geographic boundaries. The deadline to submit applications has been extended to 4:30 p.m. on Monday, February 25, 2019. For more information on how to apply, visit the District's website here.

SCHOOL SHOWCASE INFORMATIONAL MEETINGS
SAUSD has one primary goal - to prepare students with 21st century skills to graduate from high school and to become productive contributors to our society. Over the past two months, dozens of SAUSD schools have hosted School Showcase Parent Informational Meetings to help students and families learn more about the District's campuses and programs and how they can help students develop these skills. The informational series wraps up today with a presentation at 6 p.m. at Saddleback High School, 2802 S. Flower St., 92707. For more information, call (714) 569-6300.

SPURGEON STUDENTS SHINE AT SCHOLASTIC CHESS TOURNAMENT
Avely Cordon, Assessment and Data Specialist at Spurgeon Intermediate School, reports that chess players from the school recently participated in the 45th Annual Morrison Scholastic Chess Tournament in Fullerton. After only learning the game in two to four weeks, they held up well in the five-hour tournament against students who have been playing for years. The school took home a third place trophy at the 8th grade level.
