SAUSD SCHOOL SITES HOSTING NATIONAL SPEECH AND DEBATE COMPETITION
The Santa Ana Unified School District (SAUSD), City of Santa Ana and the Santa Ana Chamber of Commerce are joining forces through April 22, 2019 to host more than 1,000 students from nearly 100 U.S. colleges who are competing in the 2019 National Forensics Association Championship Tournament. Santa Ana High School is the main tournament site; Martin R. Heninger K-8 School is the secondary tournament site. SAUSD is home to a flourishing, districtwide National Award Winning Speech and Debate program that engages more than 400 students in various grades, and was ignited by a partnership between SAUSD and Kiwanis of Santa Ana. SAUSD STUDENTS RECEIVE SANTA ANA PUBLIC SCHOOLS FOUNDATION SCHOLARSHIPS
The Santa Ana Public Schools Foundation this week awarded $35,000 in scholarships to SAUSD students during its recognition ceremony at Saddleback High School. Awards ranged from the new $4,000 Santa Ana College Promise Scholarships, to the new $500 Quick Start scholarships for CTE students. For a list of winners,

423 SERVED AT FREE VISION SCREENING EVENT AT CENTURY HIGH SCHOOL
SAUSD partnered with Lions Clubs from Santa Ana, Tustin and Orange, plus California Lions Friends In Sight, to provide hundreds with free vision screenings and recycled eyeglasses at Century High School on April 13, 2019. In all, 423 people were served. More than 75 Lions, including SAUSD employees, volunteered at the event, as did more than 60 youth Lions ("Leos"). The Leos also staged a Diabetes Fair with tips for healthy snacks, food samples, games and activities, face painting, and information on diabetes management and prevention. For photos, click here.

2019 SAUSD EDUCATORS AND CLASSIFIED EMPLOYEES OF THE YEAR ANNUAL CELEBRATION
The 2019 SAUSD Classified Employees of the Year will be recognized on Tuesday, April 30, 2019, and the Educators of the Year, which includes Teachers and Support Services staff, will be recognized at the 2019 SAUSD Educators of the Year Ceremony on Wednesday, May 1, 2019. SAUSD STUDENTS IN RUNNING FOR OC REGISTER'S ARTIST OF THE YEAR AWARD
Students from high schools across SAUSD are being highlighted in the Orange County Register this month for being nominated as Orange County's high school Artist of the Year. A total of 507 students were nominated by teachers and private instructors from 88 Orange County high schools and arts organizations as the county's standout arts students in the fields of theater, dance, film, vocal music, instrumental music, 2-D visual arts and 3-D visual arts. And SAUSD scholars are among them! The top Artist of the Year for each discipline will be announced on April 21.

TWO SAUSD TEACHERS TO RECEIVE OCMAA AWARDS MAY 9
Two SAUSD teachers will be honored during the May 9, 2019 2019 OC Music and Arts Educators Awards Ceremony at the Segerstrom Center for the Arts, sponsored by Orange County Music and Arts Administrators (OCMAA). Joaquin Hernandez of Santa Ana Valley High School will be recognized as secondary instrumental music educator, and Naomi Kadinoff of Villa Fundamental Intermediate will be honored as middle school visual arts educator. Congratulations to both!

SANTA ANA VALLEY HIGH SCHOOL HOSTS ANNUAL HEALTH & WELLNESS CONFERENCE
More than 200 Santa Ana Valley High School Culinary Arts and Healthcare Academy students recently attended the Annual Health & Wellness Conference: Health Meets Food at the school. The event highlighted industry trends, college and career options, mindful eating tips, and more. Students heard from Keynote Speaker Dr. Patricia Riba on the topic of nutrition and childhood obesity, and met with industry representatives from various groups including pro volleyball player Kyle Friend. The event ended with an interactive Health & Wellness Fair featuring over 20 vendors. The conference has been offered to students over the past 10 years and is a collaborative effort between Santa Ana Valley High School, High School Inc., and community organizations and supporters.
