SAUSD HONORS 2019 'PARENTS OF THE YEAR'  

The Santa Ana Unified School District (SAUSD) this week honored 55 parent volunteers representing its elementary, intermediate and high schools during the annual Parent of the Year awards celebration at Segerstrom High School. Recipients are active in groups and activities ranging from PTO and PTA, to GRIP, DAC/DELAC, SAELI, Padres En Acción, and more. The Elementary Parent of the Year is Uziel Gil from Davis Elementary; the Intermediate Parent of the Year is America Banda from Villa Fundamental; the High School Parent of the Year is Margarita Morales from Valley High School. SAUSD STUDENTS EARN NEARLY $825,000 IN AVID SCHOLARSHIPS

Thirty eight SAUSD seniors who are active in the Advancement Via Individual Determination
(AVID) program at their school sites were presented with scholarships during the AVID Senior Standout Recognition and Scholarship Presentation on April 24, 2019 at UC Irvine. SAUSD students received a total of $824,500 in scholarship funds. Godinez Fundamental High School students came away with $315,000 in funding - the most of any school in the county - setting a campus record. AVID's mission is to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society; it currently serves 30,000 Orange County students in 18 school districts. LOS ANGELES ANGELS 'ADOPT' LINCOLN ELEMENTARY

Los Angeles Angels starting pitcher Felix Peña and AM830 sports talk show host, Roger Lodge, spent a recent morning visiting students at Lincoln Elementary School as part of the Angels Baseball Foundation Adopt-A-School program. Angels Baseball has selected Lincoln to be included in its 12th class of Adopted Elementary Schools. During the visit, Angels representatives introduced the program and what it means to be an adopted school, and donated $2,000 to the school, tickets to the school to be used as incentives, and a banner to hang at the school. BOARD OF EDUCATION

The Board of Education met on April 23, 2019. 

The meeting began with the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance by Emily Lai, a 9th grade student from Godinez Fundamental High School.

During the meeting, the Board honored: 
  • 28 students from Godinez Fundamental High School's Distinguished Grizzly Academy 
  • Student Rebekah Durham for receiving the "Every Student Succeeding" award for 2018-19  
  • Student Maximo Jauregui for designing the theme artwork for the 43rd Annual Very Special Arts Festival
  • Karen Tadros, a teacher at Santiago Elementary School, as Certificated Employee of the Month for April 2019. To learn more about her, watch this video.
  • Naomi Escobedo, a library media technician at Wilson Elementary School, as Classified Employee of the Month for April 2019. To learn more about her, watch this video
The Board also adopted resolutions proclaiming:  
  • April 22-26, 2019 as Afterschool Professionals Appreciation Week 
  • May 5-11, 2019 as National Teacher/Support Staff Appreciation Week  
  • May 6-12, 2019 as National School Nurses' Week 
  • May 12-18, 2019 as National Police Week
  • May 19-25, 2019 as Classified School Employee Week 
The next Regular Meeting of the Board of Education will be held on Tuesday, May 7, 2019, at 6:00 p.m.

SADDLEBACK IB STUDENT NAMED GATES SCHOLAR

Lucía González, an International Baccalaureate student at Saddleback High School, was notified this week from The Gates Millennium Scholarship that she has been selected as a Gates Scholar. Lucía is one of 300 scholars chosen from a pool of over 36,500 applicants across the nation. She has distinguished herself through outstanding academic achievement and personal excellence. She will receive a full ride scholarship to the university of her choice, which will follow her through graduate school. Congratulations Lucía!
SEGERSTROM TEACHER NAMED SEMIFINALIST FOR COUNTY TEACHER OF THE YEAR AWARD

Adam Woods, Science/STEM Teacher at Segerstrom High School, has been selected as one of 15 semifinalists for the 2020 Orange County Teachers of the Year program. As a semifinalist, he will move forward to the interview process at the Orange County Department of Education, and as a nominee, he will be honored at a banquet on November 1, 2019.

EMPLOYEES OF THE YEAR TO BE HONORED NEXT WEEK 

The 2019 SAUSD Classified Employees of the Year will be recognized on Tuesday, April 30, 2019, and the Educators of the Year, which includes Teachers and Support Services staff, will be recognized at the 2019 SAUSD Educators of the Year Ceremony on Wednesday, May 1, 2019. Both events will take place at Santa Ana High School at 6:00 p.m. Click here to view a list of the honorees.
