50+ SAUSD SCHOOLS GET NEW 'PRINCIPALS FOR A DAY'
The Santa Ana Unified School District (SAUSD) held its annual "Principal for a Day" event on March 22, 2019 to provide community members an opportunity to experience the daily operation of a school. In all, more than 50 of the District's schools hosted a guest principal. The day wrapped up as guest principals joined all of the principals in the District for a luncheon and program at McFadden Intermediate School, where they shared their experiences. This year's guest principals included members of the SAUSD Board of Education, songwriter/producer and Turnaround Arts: California mentor Mark Ronson, local elected officials, and representatives of law enforcement, retail, restaurant, and other industries. SCHOLAR DOLLARS COMPETITION DEADLINE NEARS!
Only a few hours remain to help four SAUSD campuses win funds through the 2019 Scholar Dollars Program, sponsored by State Treasurer Fiona Ma and ScholarShare 529. Mendez Fundamental Intermediate, Willard Intermediate, Washington Elementary and John Muir Fundamental Elementary are all in the running this year! The program will award more than $300,000 to K-8 public and charter schools, and the funds can be used to support extracurricular and enrichment programs. SAUSD's Santiago Elementary is a previous winner. Supporters older than 18 may

51 SAUSD SITES EARN PBIS RECOGNITION
SAUSD recently had 51 sites awarded recognition through the state PBIS recognition system. The following 12 sites received Platinum, the highest recognition level: Adams, Diamond, Franklin, Fremont, Mendez, Esqueda K-8, Monroe, Pio Pico, Villa Intermediate, Saddleback High School, Santa Ana High School, and Santa Ana Valley High School. Only 41 sites in the state received platinum level. An additional 6 sites received Gold recognition: Heninger K-8, King, Segerstrom, Taft, Monte Vista, and Washington. Thirty-three sites received Silver: Advanced Learning Academy, Greenville, Hoover, Santiago K-8, Carr Intermediate, Carver, Century High School, Chavez High School, Davis, Edison, Garfield, Godinez High School, Harvey, Heroes, Jefferson, Kennedy, Lathrop Intermediate, Lincoln, Lowell, Macarthur Intermediate, Madison, Martin, McFadden Intermediate, Muir, REACH, Romero-Cruz, Roosevelt, Sierra, Spurgeon Intermediate, Thorpe, Walker, Willard, and Wilson. The requirements for reaching the highest levels of achievement continue to become more rigorous each year. This year sites needed to demonstrate fidelity on the Tiered Fidelity Inventory Assessment, low suspension rates, evidence of data tracking tools, and 3 years of sustained or improved academics.

STUDENT ATHLETES TAKE TO THE FIELD FOR SPECIAL OLYMPICS 2019
Hundreds of Santa Ana Unified student athletes gathered at the Santa Ana Public Schools Sports Complex on March 15, 2019 for Special Olympics 2019. 6 SAUSD EMPLOYEES TO RECEIVE 'WOMAN OF THE YEAR' AWARDS FROM CONGRESSMAN J. LUIS CORREA
Six SAUSD employees have been selected to receive Woman of the Year awards from Congressman J. Luis Correa (CA-46) this weekend. They are: Kelly Crowe Yrarrazaval, Brandi Augenstein, Roselinn Lee, Aida Abascal, Laurie Tristan and Mireya Vazquez. The recipients will be recognized along with other distinguished women from the community during a special Women's History Month celebration featuring a special legislative update and an awards presentation, on March 23, 2019 at Chapman University in Orange.

MADISON PRINCIPAL NAMED A 'WOMAN OF THE YEAR' FOR 69TH ASSEMBLY DISTRICT
Each year during the month of March, the California State Assembly honors women who have significantly contributed to their communities. For her years of leadership in elementary education, Lisa Gonzales-Solomon, Principal of Madison Elementary School, has been named a Woman of the Year for the 69th Assembly District. She will be recognized at a gathering hosted by State Assemblymember Tom Daly on March 28, 2019 at the Cal State Fullerton Grand Central Art Center in Santa Ana. "Your passion for instilling the love of learning to thousands of students makes you worthy of this recognition," her award letter reads.
