SANTA ANA VALLEY STUDENT WINS CAR DURING PERFECT ATTENDANCE CAR GIVEAWAY   

For the 13th year in a row, Guaranty Chevrolet on May 11, 2019 gave away a new car to an SAUSD student with perfect attendance. In the 2018-19 school year, 756 SAUSD students with perfect attendance were eligible to win. Geovani Salgado of Santa Ana Valley High School won the grand prize, and several other students with perfect attendance took home gift cards and other door prizes. GODINEZ SOFTBALL TEAM TO PLAY IN CIF-SS CHAMPIONSHIP GAME THIS WEEK  
 
Congratulations to Godinez High School's softball team who won their first Golden West League title this season by going undefeated and earning top OC softball team ranking going into the playoffs!  The team has moved along and will take on El Segundo High School for the championship title on Saturday, May 18, 2019 at Deanna Manning Stadium at Bill Barber Park in Irvine at 9:30 a.m. Click here to learn more. CARVER TEACHER RECEIVES CLASSROOM MAKEOVER FROM HELPFUL HONDA  
 
Veronica DeBruhl-Githens, a Carver Elementary School teacher and SAUSD 2019 Districtwide Elementary Teacher of the Year, was presented with a surprise classroom makeover this week from SoCal Honda to celebrate Teacher Appreciation Week.
Helpful Honda honored and surprised five deserving teachers with approximately $5,000 of supplies/needs to identify teachers in schools across Southern California who have gone above and beyond to give their students a memorable and unmatched educational experience.

SAUSD'S ROMERO-CRUZ ACADEMY TO DEBUT IN FALL 2019 

With the focus and intent to increase the educational opportunities for students, SAUSD will be combining the school communities of Romero Cruz Elementary and Spurgeon Intermediate School into Romero-Cruz Academy to create an enriching Pre-K-8 learning option for students. Beginning in the fall of 2019, both existing schools will be integrated into one campus with specifically tailored state-of-the-art classrooms and other facilities for Pre-K, Kindergarten, elementary and intermediate grades. The school will feature a Dual Language (Spanish) program, a schoolwide AVID program, a Visual and Performing Arts focus and much more. To read more, click here.
SANTA ANA VALLEY CLASS OF 2019 CELEBRATES THE FUTURE

The Santa Ana Valley High School Senior Class of 2019 celebrated its commitments to post-secondary education with a Signing Day event on May 3, 2019. Activities included a special lunch menu, a Class of 2019 panoramic photo, photobooth opportunities, group photos of students going to the same college, an inflatable obstacle course and college giveaways. Valley Signing Day events began in 2015 after Michelle Obama began her Reach Higher campaign in 2014.
SAUSD STUDENTS ATTEND SIGNING DAY EVENTS  

Students from high schools across the Santa Ana Unified School District recently participated in Signing Day events at UC Irvine and UCLA. Michelle Obama selected UCLA as the campus where she addressed a crowd of almost 10,000 high school seniors pursuing a college degree to encourage them to continue reaching higher than what may be expected of them based on their background. This message was broadcast to students at UC Irvine. All six comprehensive high schools, and two alternative ed sites from SAUSD participated in the UC Irvine event. Three high schools also participated in the event held at UCLA.
MARTIN STUDENTS SCORE IN CHESS TOURNAMENT

A group of Martin Elementary students competed at the recent Children Of Promise Youth Chess Tournament in Lynwood. Damian Avilés took 1st place in the 4th grade division, and Alice Rubio took 1st place in the 3rd grade division. In addition, Martin's chess team won several trophies at various grade levels. Martin's chess team took home the most overall trophies, as it also did in the Stacer Scholastic tournament in Anaheim.

SEGERSTROM STUDENT WINS SANTA ANA PHOTO FESTIVAL  

Segerstrom Junior Camila Quinones recently won 1st place in the youth division of the Santa Ana Photo Festival. Her prizes included a 16 x 20 custom print of her image, a $100 gift certificate for photographic supplies, and admission to a photography workshop of her choice. Hosted by the California Center for Digital Arts, the Santa Ana Photo Festival is a new photo festival that celebrates the history and culture of Southern California.
SADDLEBACK NJROTC HOLDS ANNUAL MILITARY BALL

Saddleback High School's NJROTC unit recently held its annual Military Ball for cadets and parents on campus. The celebration featured formal dining, followed by dancing and socializing.
The District, through Alfonso Alvarez, Ed.D., Clerk of the SAUSD Board of Education, presented parents and staff chaperones of Saddleback NJROTC with certificates of appreciation for all the hard work and dedication they provided to the Saddleback NJROTC unit over the past year.
Parents and staff were pleasantly surprised.
SAUSD STUDENTS PARTICIPATE IN SANTA ANA IN DESIGN FASHION SHOW 

SAUSD students recently participated in the Santa Ana In Design (S.A.I.D.) Spring/Summer Fashion Show in Downtown Santa Ana, joining in an effort that highlighted designs by a pipeline of local designers. The event brought together designers from junior, collegiate, and professional collections; design teams were organized by fashion leaders at SAUSD and Santa Ana College, and educators Jennifer Acuna (SAUSD Fashion) and Kyla Benson (SAC Fashion). The main focus of S.A.I.D. is to inspire people to become creative, to be enthusiastic to design and to become the change that they want to see in the world that they inhabit.
