SAUSD STUDENTS PLAN FOR COLLEGE DURING KINDERCAMINATA 2019
More than 1,300 Santa Ana Unified School District (SAUSD) Kindergarten students from Adams, Davis, Esqueda, Jackson, Jefferson, Kennedy, Madison, Muir Fundamental, Sepulveda and Thorpe Fundamental schools attended KinderCaminata 2019 at Santa Ana College on March 8, 2019. Through special activity stations, inspiring speeches and a march, the annual event strives to provide an early college experience for children to imagine that college is possible. The KinderCaminata experience was founded in 1993 to celebrate the life and accomplishments of César Chávez. "¡Sí, se puede!" is Chávez's motto and has been the theme of KinderCaminata since the beginning. To view photos, click here.

SAUSD SCHOOL ATTENDANCE AND REVIEW BOARD NAMED MODEL FOR OTHERS IN STATE
The SAUSD School Attendance and Review Board (SARB) has been selected as a model for other SARBs in California. Areas that contributed to this recognition are: Chronic absenteeism - lower than the state and county; system of support for students with attendance issues; engagement of community partners; truancy notification process to parents; MTSS tiered approach; and outreach - home visitation.

BOARD APPOINTS MEMBERS TO MEASURE I CITIZENS' BOND OVERSIGHT COMMITTEE
The Board of Education has appointed the following community members to the Citizens' Bond Oversight Committee for Measure I: Elaine Beverly, Denise Lynn Reynoso, Rob Lee Richardson, Lucinda Solórzano, Valery Vasquez, Victor Vasquez, and Bulmaro Vicente. In November 2018, Measure I was put before the voters of SAUSD and was successful. The purpose of the committee is to actively review and report on the expenditure of voter approved bonds; receive and review copies of annual performance and financial audits; and present an annual written report to the Board of Trustees. 4 SAUSD SCHOOLS IN RUNNING FOR SCHOLAR DOLLARS
Four SAUSD schools - Mendez Fundamental Intermediate, Willard Intermediate, Washington Elementary and Muir Fundamental Elementary - are vying to win funds through the 2019 Scholar Dollars Program, sponsored by State Treasurer Fiona Ma and ScholarShare 529. The program will award more than $300,000 to K-8 public and charter schools this year, and the funds can be used to support extracurricular and enrichment programs. SAUSD's Santiago Elementary is a previous winner. Supporters older than 18 may vote for their school of choice once per day through March 22, 2019.

BOARD OF EDUCATION
The Board of Education met on March 12, 2019. The meeting began with the recitation of the Pledge of Allegiance by Jose Vazquez, REACH Academy student.
During the meeting, the Board recognized:
- Santa Ana Early Learning Initiative
- We Care Art Contest Winners
- Independent Bond Campaign Committee
Board Members also adopted a resolution proclaiming March 2019 as Social Work Month.
The next Regular Meeting of the Board of Education will be held on Tuesday, March 26, 2019, at 6:00 p.m.

46 SAUSD STUDENTS RECOGNIZED AT UCI LAW ACADEMY EVENT
Forty-six SAUSD students were recognized at the UCI Saturday Academy of Law (SAL) Ceremony on March 9, 2019: 5 students from Century High School; 10 from Godinez Fundamental Intermediate School; 9 from Saddleback High School; 9 from Segerstrom High School; and 13 from Santa Ana Valley High School. The UCI SAL program is designed to help students develop stronger critical reading, writing and speaking skills, while providing students with the opportunity to learn about exciting careers in law. SAUSD 9th grade students attend classes at UCI School of Law. They meet judges, attorneys, and law enforcement officials. They also learn about First Amendment rights as students.

SANTA ANA HIGH SCHOOL STUDENT RECEIVES $5,000 FILM SCHOLARSHIP
Miguel Mendoza, a Santa Ana High School student, has been awarded a $5,000 scholarship from the Youth Cinema Project on behalf of Edward James Olmos and the group's Board of Directors. The award is given to one high school student who has shown great academic improvement and displayed extraordinary filmmaking excellence. Miguel was selected from among nearly 1,300 students in the YCP program throughout the state. The award comes with a paid Los Angeles Latino International Film Festival summer internship upon finishing high school.

FOUNDATION GIVES NEW ATHLETIC SHOES TO INTERMEDIATE STUDENTS
Students from MacArthur Fundamental Intermediate and McFadden Intermediate schools received new athletic shoes on March 6, 2019 as part of the District's partnership with the Kevin Armstrong, M.D. Memorial Sports Foundation (KAMSF). KAMSF also partners with the District to co-sponsor and support intermediate sports tournaments including basketball, volleyball, soccer, and flag football as well as provide healthy snacks for student athletes and lunch for volunteers at the Annual Track & Field Tournament.

WALKER STUDENTS ATTEND 3-DAY SCIENCE CAMP
Forty-seven fifth grade students from Walker Elementary School recently attended science camp in Running Springs for three days. The students participated in day and night hikes, and learned about geology and astronomy (viewing constellations through large telescopes).
