SAUSD JOINS PARTNERSHIP PLEDGING COMMON STANDARD FOR REOPENING SCHOOLS
The Santa Ana Unified School District (SAUSD) has joined a partnership with six other districts statewide pledging to commit to a common standard for reopening schools. Together, the districts have provided a path to a Common Standard for all public schools in California and have asked Governor Newsom, the state Legislature and local county and city governments to join in this commitment. CHECK SAUSD WEBSITE FOR COVID-19 TESTING RESOURCES
COVID-19 case levels in parts of Santa Ana remain a concern. As a service to the community, the District has posted information about free COVID-19 testing opportunities being offered by the City of Santa Ana, Latino Health Access and other groups to the COVID-19 resource webpage. O.C. HEALTH CARE AGENCY SEEKING FEEDBACK ON COVID-19 VACCINE 
The O.C. Health Care Agency is conducting a survey of attitudes toward vaccination for COVID-19, which will be of great assistance in planning for distribution of the COVID-19 vaccine when it becomes available. SAUSD is helping to get the word out to the community. To participate, click here

FACE COMMUNITY RESOURCES NEWSLETTER FOR NOV. 6
The SAUSD Family and Community Engagement (FACE) team has released a new edition of its weekly Community Resources Newsletter. MENTAL HEALTH RESOURCES FOR SAUSD STUDENTS AND FAMILIES
Did you know that SAUSD offers a list of mental health and wellness resources that students and families can connect with during weekends and after-school hours? Click here to learn more about the agencies that can be contacted during these times for help. 


MEAL DISTRIBUTION SCHEDULE UPDATED 
Please note: the District’s meal distribution schedule was updated this week to reflect upcoming holidays. (Although it is a student free day in SAUSD for students in grades K-12, meal service will remain open at all sites on Nov. 6.) The District is serving free meals to all children ages 1-18 at 58 sites through the end of 2020. In addition, the District has also expanded service times, so that meals may now be picked up in the morning, afternoon and evening. For the updated schedule, click here.
SAUSD DELIVERING FREE MEALS TO TWO APARTMENT COMPLEXES
SAUSD is now also providing free meals for children at Warwick Square and Villa Del Sol apartment complexes. SAUSD serves free meals to children ages 1 to 18 at the Warwick Square apartments, located at 780 S. Lyon St., #911, from 11 a.m. to noon, and at the Villa Del Sol apartments, located at 811 S. Fairview St., from noon to 1 p.m. Click here for details. 


HIGHLIGHTED VIDEO
The California Department of Education has named Laura Gómez, a third-grade teacher at Martin Elementary School, a 2021 California Teacher of the Year, the highest honor for educators statewide. Gómez, a teacher of 25 years, is one of five teachers across California to earn this recognition. Gómez was named earlier this year as the Santa Ana Unified Teacher of the Year and as an Orange County Teacher of the Year. To learn more about her, click here.

Meet An Ho, a proud SAUSD alum!

Ho emigrated from a different country during his high school years and attended Saddleback High School. Without knowing or speaking any English he said: “The warm welcome I received was one of the best things that happened to me.” 

He credits SAUSD for the great support system that it offers students. From its many amazing programs to the wonderful supportive staff, SAUSD provides everything students need to be successful, he said. 

Ho graduated from Saddleback in 2016. In May 2020, he graduated from the University of California, Berkeley with a degree in Computer Science.

He is currently working as a Software Developer Engineer at Amazon.

HONORS & ACCOLADES
ACTIVE LEARNING FOUNDER PENS NEW CHILDREN’S BOOK 
Hiba Shublak, founder of Active Learning and Active Learning Believe & Inspire, a non-profit that has provided after school enrichment activities to SAUSD students since 2003, has written her first children’s book, “Where is Bejou?” In it, a frantic girl, surrounded by optimistic friends and acquaintances, is looking for her lost dog. In the process, she begins to grasp an understanding of love and loss, and their eternal effect on her life. To read more, click here


SANTA ANA HIGH SCHOOL TEACHER RECOGNIZED BY PARENTING OC 
Congratulations to Kathy Cobb-Woll of Santa Ana High School, who was nominated in Parenting OC’s Top Teachers of Orange County contest. Cobb-Woll has been teaching vocal music for 40 years; her choirs have traveled to New York 10 times, and have sung at Carnegie Hall multiple times. To read her nomination letter, click here.
MENDEZ TEACHER WINS LITERARY AWARD FOR HIS BOOK, ‘EFRÉN DIVIDED’
Ernesto Cisneros, a teacher from Mendez Fundamental Intermediate School, recently received statewide recognition for his book “Efrén Divided,” which tells the story of a boy whose life is changed when his mother is deported to Mexico. Cisneros, a Santa Ana High School alum, received the Golden Poppy Award from the California Independent Booksellers Alliance in the category of Best Middle-Grade Book of 2020 in California. ART BY VALLEY STUDENTS ON DISPLAY AT SELF HELP GRAPHICS
Ceramics created by Santa Ana Valley High School students are now on display in a Día de los Muertos-themed art show at Self Help Graphics & Art in Los Angeles, as part of a collaborative installation with Valley art instructor Rigo Maldonado. The installation, titled “And still I rise,” reflects on the experiences of the pandemic and the Black Lives Matter movement and those who passed away in connection to both. SADDLEBACK MUSIC PROGRAM TO BE HIGHLIGHTED DURING NOV. 7 ARTWALK 
#Sausdartsforward, the SAUSD segment of Downtown Santa Ana’s monthly virtual artwalk, begins at 6 p.m. on Nov. 7. Representatives of Saddleback High School's music program will be playing portions of their digital music concert and sharing a bit about their creative process and innovative tools. Tune in to Downtown Santa Ana 's Facebook Live event to watch.
ARTWORK BY SADDLEBACK STUDENTS FEATURED IN COUNTYWIDE EXHIBIT 
Artwork by Saddleback High School students Timothy Hammett and Brandon Salgado was recently selected by the Orange County Department of Education and VSA Orange County to be a part of their annual traveling art exhibit, “Arts on the Move.” The traveling show, which featured select pieces from the 2020 VSA Festival, was showcased virtually by museums, businesses and cultural centers across Orange County to help shine a light on artists with disabilities for Disability Awareness Month.
