Superintendent Jerry Almendarez gave a brief update to the Santa Ana Unified School District (SAUSD) Board of Education at its meeting this week regarding local COVID-19 case rates and what they mean for the District. Click here to watch his report.
FREE FLU VACCINE CLINICS FOR STUDENTS RUN THROUGH OCT. 29  
SAUSD continues to offer free, weekly drive-thru flu vaccine clinics for SAUSD students through Oct. 29. These clinics will help students stay safe and healthy as we approach the upcoming flu season. The vaccine will be delivered in mist form, unless the student’s health condition requires an alternate delivery method. The next clinic takes place Oct. 22 at Century High School. CHECK SAUSD WEBSITE FOR COVID-19 TESTING RESOURCES
COVID-19 case levels in parts of Santa Ana remain a concern. As a service to the community, the District has posted information about free COVID-19 testing opportunities being offered by the City of Santa Ana, Latino Health Access and other groups to the COVID-19 resource webpage. Click here to view them. Free COVID-19 testing for SAUSD athletes and Santa Ana residents is slated to take place Oct. 20 at Santa Ana Valley High School, and Oct. 22 at Segerstrom High School. SAUSD NOW OFFERING EXPANDED MEAL SERVICE AT 58 SITES

SAUSD has expanded its free meal service as part of the Board of Education’s ongoing mission to continue to provide free, nutritious food for students during the COVID-19 pandemic. The District is now serving free meals to all children ages 1-18 at 58 sites through the end of 2020. In addition, the District has also expanded service times, so that meals may now be picked up in the morning, afternoon and evening.

SAUSD NOW DELIVERING FREE MEALS TO TWO APARTMENT COMPLEXES
As a service to the community, SAUSD is now providing free meals for children at Warwick Square and Villa Del Sol apartment complexes as part of the Board of Education’s ongoing mission to continue to provide free, nutritious food for students during the COVID-19 pandemic. SAUSD is now serving free meals to children ages 1 to 18 at Warwick Square apartments, located at 780 S. Lyon St., #911, from 11 a.m. to noon, and at Villa Del Sol apartments, located at 811 S. Fairview St., from noon to 1 p.m. Click here for details. 


SAUSD ATTENDANCE AWARENESS CAMPAIGN CONTINUES 
SAUSD is continuing to roll out an attendance awareness campaign, titled “Present, Engaged, and Supported,” during the month of October. The District will motivate all students to attend class, educate parents on the importance of attendance, and support staff to continue building engagement in the classroom. Site incentives will be given to schools with the most improved attendance for the month of October. Students and parents are encouraged to connect with their school sites for more information.

Meet Joe Rico, proud SAUSD employee! Rico is a computer technician for SAUSD, and a proud product of the District. He attended Heninger Elementary, Willard Intermediate and Santa Ana High School. One of his favorite things about SAUSD is the dedicated and hard working staff that work collectively to create an impact in the lives of students.

Meet Cecilia Bautista, a proud SAUSD parent! Bautista is a mother of three daughters: two Century High School students and one college student. One of her favorite things about SAUSD are the opportunities that the District provides for parents to participate in programs that are offered in schools. SAUSD allows her to volunteer and thus be more involved in her children's education and have a closer relationship with their teachers.

SEGERSTROM STUDENTS PARTNER WITH LULAC TO PROMOTE 2020 CENSUS
Segerstrom High School students recently partnered with Santa Ana LULAC Council #147 to help spread the word about the importance of participating in the 2020 Census. Students designed posters to share on social media and in their community. To view the students’ work, click here.
NEW PARK TO HONOR NAMESAKES OF MENDEZ FUNDAMENTAL INTERMEDIATE  
The Orange County Department of Education and the City of Westminster this week hosted a virtual groundbreaking for a new park and monument highlighting the Mendez v. Westminster case, which led to the desegregation of California’s public schools. Located along Westminster Boulevard at Olive Street, the park will feature statues depicting Gonzalo and Felicitas Mendez, for whom SAUSD’s Mendez Fundamental Intermediate School is named.
