SAUSD BOARD OF EDUCATION APPOINTS JERRY ALMENDAREZ AS SUPERINTENDENT
The Santa Ana Unified School District (SAUSD) Board of Education this week appointed Jerry Almendarez as Superintendent, bringing a three-month nationwide search to a close. Almendarez has been the Superintendent of the Colton Joint Unified School District since 2010. His career in education spans 27 years, and includes experience as a classroom teacher, an assistant principal and a principal. He begins Jan. 1, 2020. To read more about him, click here


SAUSD TO OBSERVE THANKSGIVING HOLIDAY NOV. 25-27
Thanksgiving week is right around the corner at SAUSD! Students have next week off for Thanksgiving Recess, as there is no instruction on Nov. 25-27, 2019. As a District, SAUSD is observing the Thanksgiving Holiday on Nov. 28 and Nov. 29, 2019. In addition, the District Office will be closed to the public from Nov. 25 to 29, 2019 in observation of the Thanksgiving Holiday. Classes will resume and the District Office will reopen on Dec. 2, 2019. We wish our SAUSD community a restful and pleasant holiday break!

BOARD OF EDUCATION RECOGNIZES NATIONAL SPEECH & DEBATE CHAMPIONS
The SAUSD Board of Education this week recognized National Speech & Debate Champions from the Advanced Learning Academy for winning the national championship for the last two years. Students were presented with their championship rings, which serve as a symbol of excellence and as an example of what SAUSD produces in the area of education. This weekend, the District is sending its top 26 speech and debate students to compete at the Glenbrooks 39th annual national speech and debate invitational tournament in Northbrook, Illinois.

TELEMUNDO HIGHLIGHTS AUTO ACADEMY AT SANTA ANA VALLEY HIGH SCHOOL 
Telemundo 52 reporter Martin Plascencia visited Santa Ana Valley High School this week, to speak to students about how the Automotive Transportation and Logistics (ATL) Academy is changing their lives and providing them with a solid, valuable career path prior to high school graduation. He also highlighted the Academy’s monthly auto clinic, in which students gain real-world experience by diagnosing and fixing residents’ cars for free. To watch the segment, click here .
OC SPORTS ZONE: VINCENT TINAJERO SIGNS NATIONAL LETTER OF INTENT 
In front of family and friends at the Bill Medley Auditorium in Santa Ana High School, senior baseball standout Vincent Tinajero signed his letter of intent this week to play with Division I Bradley University next year. OCDE PROFILES NEW HEALTH CAREER PROGRAM AT MIDDLE COLLEGE HIGH SCHOOL
Middle College High School, known for offering its students college-level opportunities, is for the first time teaming up with UCI’s School of Medicine to offer a fully sequenced health care curriculum. It’s part of a national certificate program known as the Health Career Collaborative, and there are only two other partnerships like it in California. CENTURY STUDENT JOINS MEXICAN NATIONAL SOCCER TEAM
Century High School junior Samantha Lopez has joined the Under-17 Mexican National Soccer Team. Samantha has a strong background in soccer and previously represented Century at the California CIF State Championship for cross country in 2017. She is also an outstanding student.
DAVIS CHESS TEAM COMPETES AT CHAMPIONSHIP
On Nov. 17, 2019, 30 students from Davis Elementary's Chess Club participated in the 44th Annual Staser Scholastic Chess Championship at the Great Park in Irvine. Chess Coach Mr. Guillen has worked with students since October to prepare them for the tournament. In total, the students earned 9 medals.
