GRADUATION VS COMMENCEMENT

At John Jay College of Criminal Justice, graduation and commencement mean two different things. Graduation is when the College (Registrar) reviews your academic record, and if you have met all the degree requirements, adds a degree statement to your academic transcript. Commencement is the ceremony held each year at the end of the spring semester to celebrate your accomplishments.

Knowing the difference between the two will help ensure you are asking the right questions and getting the right answers! For updates and additional information, visit the Commencement Website .

APPLY FOR GRADUATION

All potential graduates must Apply for Graduation via CUNYfirst. Your graduation status needs to be "Pending" or "Awarded" to be invited to the ceremony. For more information regarding applying for graduation, visit here. The application deadlines are below:

SUMMER/FALL 2024 GRADUATES:

By October 31, 2024, summer/fall 2024 graduates must have their tuition paid in full and apply for graduation in CUNYfirst.

WINTER/SPRING 2025 GRADUATES:

By March 31, 2025, winter/spring 2025 graduates must have their tuition paid in full and apply for graduation in CUNYfirst.

SUMMER 2025 GRADUATES:

By May 1, 2025, if you have two courses or LESS in the summer and wish to participate in the Spring 2025 Commencement ceremony, you must register for summer classes AND apply for graduation via CUNYfirst. Summer 2025 graduates must have their spring tuition balance paid in full. If you are attending summer session, tuition and fees are due the day before

the first day of summer classes.

PAY TUITION IN FULL

All potential graduates must have their tuition balance paid in full by the deadlines above.

*To be included in the 2024-2025 John Jay yearbook, your senior portrait had to be taken by Tuesday, February 11, 2025. If you take your portrait after this deadline, you will NOT be included in the yearbook.*

Oak Hall: Cap and Gown

Undergraduate regalia includes a cap, gown, and tassel.

Students must wear a cap and gown to enter the Commencement venue and participate in the ceremony.

Bloodhound Depot: John Jay Stole

For those interested in purchasing a John Jay stole, a new design is being launched this year. A stole is a sash-like regalia accessory worn by graduates during commencement ceremonies to

symbolize achievements, affiliations, or honors.

The stole will be available for purchase* beginning March 5, 2025, at the upcoming Spring Grad Bash. It will then be available at the Bloodhound Depot located on L2 of the New Building (while supplies last*).
