Girls Learning About Manufacturing!

Manufacture Alabama and Bishop State Community College joined forces to host a 3-day GLAM Camp. During the camp 28 girls ranging from 6th to 11th grade learned all about careers in manufacturing. They got to go on industry tours at Airbus and Austal. They also did hands-on activities such as operating an overhead crane with the help of the female employees at AM/NS Calvert. SAWDC loved the opportunity to join in on the fun as volunteers! We look forward to supporting next year's GLAM Camp!

Bringing Alabama Industry Partners Together for Childcare

On August 8, the Regional Workforce Councils gathered for a Childcare Best Practice Exchange in Montgomery, Alabama. Individuals from over 20 companies attended and heard about TOOTRiS, a program aimed at making childcare more convenient, affordable, and on-demand for parents. Participants also heard from Mazda Toyota Manufacturing on how partnering with TOOTRiS has impacted their ability to recruit and retain talent in this high-worker-demand market.

National Fund Site Visit

SAWDC is part of more than 30 collaboratives that make up the National Fund for Workforce Solutions, whose mission is to collaborate with workers, employers, and communities to advance a skilled workforce, promote good jobs, and invest in equitable outcomes.

This past week, National Fund staff joined the SAWDC team to meet with education partners, training providers, and employers to review the on-the-ground practices and initiatives implemented to advance industry partnerships with community colleges. The day began with the Mobile Area Workforce Alliance meeting, followed by a site visit and tour of Bishop State Community College's Center for Advanced Manufacturing, and a partner lunch. Many thanks to AM/NS Calvert for hosting the team on a site visit and sharing the intentional initiatives toward workforce development within the organization.
