Alabama's first Advanced Manufacturing Apprenticeship Program

On September 5, 2024, Bishop State Community College and Industrial Valve celebrated the launch of Alabama’s first Advanced Manufacturing Apprenticeship Program with a signing day event at Bishop State’s Gene Haas Center for Advanced Manufacturing Technology. The event marked the official signing of the program’s inaugural apprentices, Justin Huber and Demetres Robinson, both current students at Bishop State.

This apprenticeship program, developed through a partnership between Bishop State and Industrial Valve, provides students with valuable hands-on experience and the critical skills required for careers in advanced manufacturing. Apprentices will split their time between working three days a week and attending classes two days a week, all while working toward nationally recognized credentials, with the goal of securing full-time employment upon completion.

Career Coach Connect

On Friday, September 6, 2024, SAWDC hosted 32 Career Coaches from Region 7 at the Saraland Civic Center for the Fall Career Coach Connect workshop. This engaging and collaborative event aimed to equip Career Coaches with essential tools and strategies to better guide students toward successful career pathways.

The workshop featured a series of impactful professional development sessions. Jamie Crouch kicked off the day with an in-depth presentation on FAFSA and the support available through the Auburn Cooperative Extension Office. Following this, Cecilia Hammond delivered a session on the FAME (Federation for Advanced Manufacturing Education) Built by Baldwin program, highlighting how this innovative partnership between industry and education is creating pathways for students into high-demand careers in manufacturing and technical fields.

Felicia Allen introduced participants to the Kuder career planning system, a comprehensive platform that offers career assessments, planning tools, and resources to help students explore and prepare for their future careers. Finally, Mark McGhee from the Alabama State Department of Education (ALSDE) wrapped up the workshop with a discussion on state-wide education policies and new initiatives to support career readiness, ensuring that Career Coaches are up-to-date on the latest developments and resources available.

The event was not only an opportunity for learning but also a chance for Career Coaches to network, share experiences, and collaborate on best practices, strengthening their collective impact on students throughout the region.
