As you are reading this, many of you will have been matched to your student(s) and perhaps met them for the first time. You will soon understand what an awesome opportunity you have to make a child believe that they can fly. Many of our children are just becoming developmentally ready to learn to read. But because of educational pressures that are brought to bear, they might believe that they are not very good at it, that it is hard, and that they just don't like it.

One for the Books Masquerade Party
Saturday, October 18 - 8pm
Roosevelt Library

It's going to be one for the books!  Join us for a lively masquerade party to benefit San Antonio Youth Literacy on Friday, October 18 at the Roosevelt Library.

Enjoy specialty cocktails by top San Antonio bars, hors d'oeuvres, a martini bar, live music and a DJ, plus a silent auction and more. Buy tickets here.

Reading Buddy Tip

The title Reading Buddy implies two roles for the volunteer: reading tutor and supportive mentor. Both roles are important and intertwined. When we build strong, supportive relationships with students they feel more at ease to take the risks that learning requires. Because of this it makes sense to take some time in the first few sessions to get to know your students. What you learn about your students will help you to tailor your sessions to fit their unique interests and talents and help them to feel comfortable tackling challenges with you. Volunteer Spotlight

A big congratulations to our Reading Buddy of the month Michelia Mason. She believes a more personal approach to volunteer work would be a beneficial way to get involved with the community and her dedication and willingness to help kids improve their reading skills has not gone unnoticed by us or the kids she has connected to.  Read more here >>
School Spotlight

Congratulations to our school of the month, Barkley-Ruiz Elementary School in SAISD. Their much-deserved recognition comes from a long history of selflessness and care that includes creating a welcoming and accommodating environment for those involved our program.
