nothing greater than to do something for others."
-Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.
One semester down and one to go! Don't know about you, but it flew by, right? This seminar is intended for Reading Buddies interested in the linguistic components of reading instruction. It will focus on how to help students learn and practice the links between letters and the sounds they represent (i.e. phonics) within a typical reading session. The seminar will incorporate some content from previous seminars, but also offer new information and strategies. Reading Buddy Seminars offer a supportive environment for volunteers to come together to learn, ask questions, and share their own experiences.
The seminar will be conducted by Program Director, Ellen Van Meter, a former teacher with a master's degree in Literacy Education.
You may remember seeing a neon pink bookmark in your initial Reading Buddy training or in the SAYL trunk on campus. This pink bookmark has different kid-friendly strategies for students to use when figuring out unknown words they encounter in the text.
Book Buddies hit the ground running soon after the holidays ended, putting in over 100 hours toward getting donated books ready for our May Book Celebrations. The loyal and hard-working Reagan High School chapter of the National Honor Society have been coming most Monday evenings and even some Saturdays to help the effort. Under the able and very organized leadership of Alyssa Carrasco, this group has sorted thousands of books while keeping everyone in good humor.Read more >>>
