SOCIAL JUSTICE SYMPOSIUM
SBA Students Reaching Out

On October 26, 2016, the Sisters of St. Basil the Great and the Justice Studies Association at Manor College held a Social Justice Symposium. The event was held at the Sisters of St. Basil Spirituality Center, and a number of foundations were present. One of the foundations in attendance was Cradle of Hope. A place for single mothers with young children, located in Glenside, Cradle of Hope offers more than just a place to live. At first glace, the home merely sounds like a place where women with babies go to live to get on their feet. However, a number of directors and counselors guide these women in need of help and direction. The home can hold up to six women, each with a child up to a ge two; therefore the women can spend up to 24 months in the home. While living there, they attend workshops and Bible study. The goal is to let the women know that God has a plan for everyone on this Earth and he will provide. Cradle of Hope has a number of success stories ranging from little to big. These will continue to grow. One of these success stories includes a currently successful District Attorney, who spent some time at Cradle of Hope. For over nineteen years, Cradle of Hope has helped over seventy women and just like the success stories, these numbers will continue to grow.

PENN MUSEUM TOUR
SBA Freshmen Explore

It was a beautiful Sunday afternoon when Freshmen took a field-trip to the Penn Museum November 6, to explore the world of Homer's "The Odyessy" and the Golden Age of Greece. The SBA trip expanded our present classroom ancient literature and history studies, adding new levels of exploration and discovery close to home.
The museum guide introduced us to archeology as a tool for understanding; she discussed Greek life and society, highlighting geography with a floor-to-ceiling electronic map that detailed the known world. It was humbling to travel back in time, where we were overwhelmed by the quantity and quality of beautiful and useful artifacts that were once used by a culture that had much in common with our own.  Later, we had time to tour the Midas exhibit, and see the Egyptian exhibit, where we snapped a group shot with a fifteen-ton, red granite Sphinx of Ramesses II, circa 1293-1185 BCE.

After the SBA Penn Museum tour, we took advantage of our surroundings to explore the University of Pennsylvania campus. There we navigated Locust Walk, exploring an active student center, an ornate special library, and the intricately painted Irvine Auditorium. Also we learned about many buildings, visited the five-foot "Button" meeting place in front of the main library, found the center of campus, and took selfies on the "Love" statue and on Ben Franklin's bench.
We hiked for blocks, and then rested at a well-know student pizza place, where we appreciatively topped the day off with pizza courtesy of SBA. It was a perfect day, mixing high-school lessons with a look at the past and a peek of our future selves as college students.
