A Historical Journey Through Art
Instructor: Mrs. Kim Fina
Art has played a significant role in every major civilization throughout history. In this course, students will examine different time periods and how the art reflects the historical events, culture, and social movements of the times. Since art and cultural values are closely related, studying art is a compelling way to learn about the people who produced it. The class will feature discussion, collaboration, hands-on activities, virtual museum tours, and optional field trips.- Students will earn .25 credit in fine arts for completing this course.
Instructor: Mr. Anatoli Murha, Director of Business Development, Ukrainian Selfreliance Federal Credit Union
This course will empower students to learn how to make the most effective personal financial decisions. Topics will include: why money matters, paying bills; spending and budgeting; banking your bucks; student loans and interest; building credit history; navigating traditional and digital banking options; and cybersecurity and scam awareness.- Students will earn .25 social studies credit for completing this course.
Compassion in Action
Instructor: Ms. Erin Breen, SBA Class of 2015
This course offers students compassionate and holistic perspectives on different social justice issues. Using Catholic Social Teaching principles as a starting point, the students will collectively explore causes and impacts of injustices facing communities, including food justice, family separation, mass incarceration and more. By completing service hours outside of the class, students will reflect on their experiences while connecting their personal service with larger issues facing society today. -
Students will earn additional service hours for completing this course.
Ms. Erin Breen '15, is currently a senior at St. Joseph's University majoring in Theology with an English/Faith Justice minor. Erin is interning at Basils during the semester and as part of her internship requirements, is offering this course to help explore and expand service opportunities.
Night at the Races: Saturday, February 9 at 7 PM
Night at the Races is Saturday, February 9, 2019 at 7 PM. (S
now date is February 16. Feel free to share this email with your family and friends.) This is the largest fundraiser of the year for the Parents' Club.
What is Night at the Races?
Night at the Races is a virtual horse track in our very own school. This audience participatory event recreates the atmosphere of the race track by using top-secret, previously recorded races that allow us to cheer and wager. There will be a 50/50 and other games of chance.
Tickets for admission include dinner, beer, wine and soda and cost $30 in advance, $35 at the door. You must be 21 to attend, and the event is open to the public. Click the links below to purchase tickets or a sponsorship.
How Do I Win?
There are two ways to win money from the horses.
- The first is to "own" a horse. You do this by sending in the form with your horse name, family name, and $5/horse. If your horse wins the race in which it is entered? You win $25! Winnings are not dependent on event attendance (but it's more fun if you are there!)
- The second is to bet on the horses at the event. Your $2 bet will pay out based on the odds. And how loud you scream for your virtual horse to win. That is totally a thing
Lucky Lotto tickets are $10 each and can be purchased ahead of time. Each ticket has 5 unique, 3-digit numbers ranging from 000-999. The number will be drawn at the event, but the winner does not need to be present. There are only 200 tickets available and 1 guaranteed winner - $1000 cash!
Still looking for ways to contribute? Sponsor a race for $100! Any individual or company that makes a $100 donation receives:
- name on the program for the sponsored race
- name announced at the beginning of the sponsored race
- a business card sized ad or message on the program.
High roller? Reach out to us to find out what other opportunities can be created for you.
Volunteer forms can be returned to school anytime. The volunteer form is also available on the
page of the SBA website.
