We have witnessed an unprecedented historic election on so many levels. We had the largest turnout of voters in an election in our history as a nation. We have elected the oldest president ever. We elected the first woman vice president who is of African American and Asian descent. The result was met with an insurrection to overturn the results with violence and death. We have lawmakers defying practices and rules that protect them and others. We had a first virtual inauguration following guidelines of the CDC practicing social distancing and wearing masks to maintain health and safety. The capitol was protected with barriers and twenty-five thousand national guards to protect the occasion due to a threat of more violence. We were reminded by the first-ever teen poet laureate, "Where can we find light in this never-ending shade? And yet, the dawn is ours before we knew it. Somehow we do it. Somehow we weathered and witnessed a nation that isn't broken but simply unfinished.” (Amanda Gorman). We are still struggling “to form a more perfect union,” (Preamble to the U.S. Constitution) “one nation under God with liberty and justice for all.” (Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag).
With the unprecedented circumstances that have occurred, we have an opportunity to adjust, modify and reset the direction of our democracy to be fair, equitable, just, and more stable for all of its citizens. There is a perennial struggle in life that requires our dedication, determination. and devotion. Each achievement, all progress, and every victory, personal as well as communally and politically, must be reinforced with resilience, resistance, and resolve in order to be maintained and sustained. Martin Luther King Jr. reminded us that “Every person must decide whether he or she will walk in the light of creative altruism or in the darkness of destructive selfishness.” The light of creative altruism requires continual, energetic vigilance for ‘once to every man and nation comes the moment to decide, in the strife of Truth with Falsehood, for the good or evil side; and the choice goes by forever 'twixt that darkness and that light.’ (James Russell Lowell, Present Crisis). Let us continue to bend with the moral arc of the universe toward justice. Let us continue to walk in the light of life saturating the world with love. Let us continue to embrace truth and not manufactured conspiratorial falsehoods. Let us continue to grow in stature and wisdom as Jesus grew in favor with God and people. Luke 2:52 (KJV).

Martin Luther King Jr. Conscience bears scrutiny as it has been used to do what is wrong and immoral. Philippians 4:8 reminds us “Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things.” “
A zoom meeting is planned this month with our health professionals to discuss the vaccine, its efficacy and necessity. You will be alerted with phone tree messages and e-mail blasts. Opportunities are being explored to do testing in our 25th St. parking lot as well as vaccinations when the vaccines are available. We will keep you notified as these opportunities are available.

Black History Documentaries & Programs
During the month of February, PBS SoCal and KCET will be showing several documentaries and programs including the four-hour, two-part series, THE BLACK CHURCH: “This Is Our Story, This Is Our Song” from executive producer, host and writer Henry Louis Gates, Jr., which traces the 400-year-old story of the Black church in America. The documentary reveals how Black people have worshipped and, through their spiritual journeys, improvised ways to bring their faith traditions from Africa to the New World, while translating them into a form of Christianity that was not only truly their own, but a redemptive force for a nation whose original sin was found in their ancestors’ enslavement across the Middle Passage. Featuring interviews with Oprah Winfrey, John Legend, Jennifer Hudson, Bishop Michael Curry, Dr. Cornel West, Pastor Shirley Caesar, Rev. Al Sharpton, Yolanda Adams, Rev. William Barber II, BeBe Winans, Bishop Vashti Murphy McKenzie and more. The documentary premieres Part One on Tues., Feb. 16 at 9 p.m. PT and Part Two on Tues., Feb. 23 on PBS SoCal.

Member Senta Georgia was featured in an article in the Washington Post!
"Doctors at Children’s Hospital Los Angeles, meanwhile, noticed an increase in the number of Type 2 diagnoses in children, as well as a severe complication of diabetes. After some of them showed evidence of past coronavirus infections, Senta Georgia, an investigator in the hospital’s Saban Research Institute, began looking deeper. Her research, which repurposes tissue from primates used in vaccine tests, is undergoing peer review."
