May 1, 2022
We are into the third year of not being able to have in-person meetings and worship. What began with the pandemic, practicing social distancing and wearing masks, has continued due to variants that continue to evolve. While we were out of our sacred space we discovered that we had structural damage that required repair before reentering for in-person meetings and worship. The trustees are attending to the situation and will keep us informed about the progress. We will continue to follow the recommendations of the CDC and health care professionals in order to remain safe and healthy.
Thank you for cooperating with what has become a protracted anomaly of uncertainty with the pandemic and our structural damage. However, that has not prevented us from being connected with each other through a variety of means. Let me thank you for your continuing commitment as you are being engaged in the following methods of communication:
- Our radio broadcast each Sunday at 8:00 am on KJLH 102.3 FM on your radio dial. The broadcast for Sunday May 1, 2022 will feature communion after the message for you to follow along participating in observing communion as Jesus requested, “do this in remembrance of me.”
- Through zooming with Sunday School Classes, Grief Recovery, Pastor’s Chat, Prayer and Bible Study on Wednesdays.
- Our church's website (secondbaptistchurchla.org) on which are shared inspirational messages to engage you as you continue to foster your faith during this challenging time.
- Facebook, telephone tree messages, e-mails, etc.
May, the fifth month of the year has a few special days in the life of our congregation. There are a few special occasions I would like to call to your attention.
Sunday, May 8, 2022, is Mother’s Day.
Mother's Day is a reminder that life is a precious, priceless gift through a process that requires discipline and sacrifice which produces wonder. The birth process, with all of its phases and stages, evokes the most enduring emotions. Remembering mom, the one through whom people enter this ephemeral reality, is a natural response to the realization of what you have been given which has made possible the potential for your living.
Sunday, May 15th is the 137th Anniversary of this congregation of believers in Christ. We have maintained an uninterrupted presence in the Los Angeles community since 1885 and 96 years at our current location. Our legacy continues with the commitment, faith, and love with which we began. Let Second Baptist Rejoice, let all of her children be glad. Psalm 48:1. Be sure to give a special anniversary offering of $137.00, a dollar for every year the church has been in existence or whatever your resources permit.
Sunday, May 29th is the fifth Sunday observed as Memorial Sunday and the Sunday of the month in which we emphasize missions and benevolences. We acknowledge the observance of Memorial Sunday and the sacrifices that have been made by those serving in the armed forces of the United States, past and present as well as our members whose contributions to the church are remembered and make contributions for missions and benevolences for the causes we support.
Let me thank you for your continuing commitment to this congregation of believers in Christ with your generosity and graciousness. I am appreciative that you give through the internet app on your phone or the website, mail your contributions to Second Baptist Church at 2419 Griffith Avenue Los Angeles, CA 90011, or bring them to the church office which is operating from 10:00 am until 3:00 pm, Monday through Friday unless Monday is a holiday as it will be on Monday, May 30th.
Keep on doing what you are doing. Be well and safe. "God bless you and keep you. God make his face to shine upon you and be gracious unto you. God lift up his countenance upon you and give you peace." Numbers 6:24-25
-Pastor Epps

Meet the Candidates for Los Angeles Mayor
Gather your friends and family to watch the Los Angeles mayoral debate on Channel 7! Elections are on June 8, 2022...know who wants to lead Los Angeles over the next 4 years. We have looming issues in a very diverse community, e.g., homelessness, city corruption, affordable housing, crime, education and healthcare, etc. The mayor can't do it all, but we need someone who understands who the constituency IS - engaged, working people!
