June 6, 2021
We are still practicing social distancing due to the Corona Virus, COVID-19. We are thankful that the vaccines are available and trust that you have received yours. Establishments are reopening with the understanding that the more people who are vaccinated the safer it will be to open with certain restrictions until herd immunity can be established. Some churches are resuming in-church worship with limited capacity, continuing with social distancing, wearing masks, and sanitizing. We have a survey on our website, (secondbaptistchurchla.org) for you to complete letting us know your thoughts about our return. We will be scheduling a virtual church meeting to share what we have done for the first six months of the year and share a few thoughts on our return to the sanctuary.
Following are the special days this month and how we are going to observe them.
Sunday June 6, 2021, we will guide you through the communion service on the pre-recorded broadcast. Also, a virtual guide facilitating communion is available on the website.
Sunday, June 13, 2021 is observed as Children's Day. Psalm 127:3 reminds us that "children are a heritage from the Lord, the fruit of the womb a reward."
Friday, June 19, 2021 is observed as Juneteenth.
The American Civil War ended in 1865. President Abraham Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation freed enslaved people in the Southern states back in 1863, but it took to the end of the war to turn the words into law. The end of slavery in America is still celebrated today in the form of the Juneteenth celebration. Juneteenth is an American holiday that commemorates the June 19, 1865 announcement of the abolition of slavery in the state of Texas and more generally the emancipation of enslaved African Americans throughout the former Confederate States of America. The name is a portmanteau, (port-man-teau), which is a combination of "June" and "nineteenth," the date of its celebration.
Juneteenth is recognized as a state holiday or special day of observance in forty-five states. Juneteenth (short for “June Nineteenth”) marks the day when federal troops arrived in Galveston, Texas in 1865 to take control of the state and ensure that all enslaved people be freed. The troops’ arrival came a full two and a half years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation. Juneteenth honors the end to slavery in the United States and is considered the longest-running African American holiday.
Sunday, June 20, 2021 is observed as Father's Day. There will be a broadcast message about fathers on KJLH.102.3 FM. Celebrate fatherhood today with your dads.
Sunday, June 27, 2021 is observed as Youth Emphasis Sunday at Second Baptist. Our youth will be leading in worship and bring messages about youth and faith on the broadcast.
June is my birth month and this is my 76th year. Thank you for your expressions of best wishes through the past 34 years as your pastor.
-Pastor
Dr. William S. Epps, Senior Pastor
