October 2, 2022
October, the tenth month of the year takes us into the last quarter of the year. We have 91 days left in 2022 including today.
October is special in the life of Second Baptist because of the variety of significant occurrences that we observe:
Sunday, October 2 is Homecoming and World Wide Communion Sunday. The first Sunday in October is observed as Homecoming Sunday. We invite members who may have been away during the summer months back to their home congregation. We also use this occasion to reduce the deficit we are experiencing due to the summer slump in attendance and contributions. You are requested to give an extra offering in addition to your regular contributions in the envelope labeled Homecoming.
We also observe World Wide Communion Sunday. We join with Christians around the world to observed what our Lord Jesus asked us to do as a way of remembering the sacrifice that was made for our salvation. This year we will observe this occasion at the 8:00 am in person service at Mount Gilead.
Sunday, October 9 is my 35th Pastoral Anniversary. We began our faith journey together the first of October in 1987. We have managed to maintain our relationship through the variety of challenges, changes, circumstances and conditions with which we have been confronted. Thank you for the past thirty-five years which have been immeasurably rewarding for my family and me. Let us continue as we have to navigate our way through the continued experiences that require our faithful response expressing our love of the Lord through our commitment to our congregation of believers in Christ.
October is observed as Breast Cancer Awareness Month: Susan G. Komen More Than Pink Walk, Saturday, October 8, LA Live, Los Angeles; Worship in Pink, Sunday, October 16; our Breast Cancer Support Ministry will be leading in worship on the broadcast on KJLH and at the in person service at Mount Gilead at 8:00 am. Celebration of Life for Helen J. Starks, Saturday, October 22, Juanita Millender McDonald Community Center in Carson, 11:00 am. Breast Cancer Awareness educational videos will be presented throughout the month at the conclusion of Bible Study, October 12; Sunday School, October 16, (Henderson Class); October 23, (Berean Class) and October 30, (Combined Classes).
Sunday, October 23 is the 74th Anniversary of the Recruiter’s League. Their members will be leading us in worship on the broadcast on KJLH and the in person service at Mount Gilead at 8:00 am.
Sunday, October 30 is Mission Emphasis Sunday. Our Mission Commission members will be leading us in worship on the broadcast on KJLH and the in person service at Mount Gilead at 8:00 am. Be sure to give a special contribution for Missions and Benevolences.
Finally, the Budget and Finance Commission is preparing the budget for 2023. They are expecting to receive budget requests from auxiliaries, committees and ministries of the church. Be sure to get your information into the church office by Sunday, October 22 so the budget for the coming year 2023 can be prepared and presented in a timely manner for the coming year.
The privilege and pleasure is all mine that we have been paired together to make this journey of faith "to serve this present age our calling to fulfill." We are on our way to inherit the promise of God. Let us continue together to see what the end will be for "the best is yet to come."

Congratulations!!!
Greetings,
Yea I have retired! 22 years with homeland security. Those years include 2 years with the Veterans administration, 12 years with TSA, 8 yeArs Secret Service. Before that 20 years in sales and marketing. I plan on spending the next year traveling to wonderful places like Thailand, Spain, the Caribbean , and of course Houston very often. But most of all I will be spending lots of time with my 5 grandchildren and family cooking up a storm for them. I will be busy but not so busy to continue to do my work for the Lord, helping my wonderful church and church family as much as possible.
Love Judith

"The Biden-Harris Administration launched a new nationwide Test to Treat initiative in March to give individuals an important way to quickly access free lifesaving treatment for COVID-19. Through this program, people are able to get tested and – if they are positive and treatments are appropri1`te for them – receive a prescription from a health care provider (either on-site or through telehealth), and have their prescription filled all at one location. These “One-Stop Test to Treat” sites are available at thousands of locations nationwide, including pharmacy-based clinics, federally-funded health centers, long-term care facilities, and community-based sites. In May, the program was expanded to include federally-supported Test to Treat sites. People can continue to be tested and treated by their own health care providers, health care clinics in their community, and telehealth providers who can appropriately prescribe the oral antivirals to locations where the medicines are distributed."
