"Beloved, now we are children of God; and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is."
I John 3:2
We have had a historic election to determine the direction of our nation. Americans together addressed the crises facing the country and won the battle for the soul of our nation. The results will be certified by the states within a few weeks. It is clear that President-elect Joe Biden and Vice President elect Kamala Harris were chosen by the American people to lead us through the challenges of managing the pandemic caused by Covid-19, the partisan gridlock in the Congress, the deep divisions that exist culturally, economically, morally, politically, racially etc. We pray for those who will assume the awesome responsibility of attempting the process of finding common ground in an attempt to ameliorate the ruptures that separate half of the electorate from the other half.
“We can disagree and still love each other unless your disagreement is rooted in my oppression and denial of my humanity and right to exist." James Baldwin
“If there is no struggle, there is no progress. Those who profess to favor freedom, and yet depreciate agitation are men who want crops without plowing up the ground. They want rain without thunder and lightning. They want the ocean without the awful roar of its many waters." Frederick Douglass
“The mystic chords of memory, stretching from every battlefield and patriot grave to every living heart and hearthstone all over this broad land, will yet swell the chorus of the Union, when again touched, as surely they will be, by the better angels of our nature.” Abraham Lincoln first inaugural address.
We pray that the better angels of our nature will prevail "in order to form a more perfect union, establish, justice, ensure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity. (Constitution of the United States 1787).
I close as I began: "Beloved, now we are children of God; and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is."
We are a work in progress. It does not yet appear what we shall be but as we continue to be empowered by the Spirit of Christ, we have the possibility of becoming more of what the Lord intends us to be. Jesus prayed for us "And the glory which You gave Me I have given them, that they may be one just as We are one:" John 17:22
One in principle, one is purpose and one in practice.
Amen.
