A Note from the Alaska SBDC Interim State Director

Last month’s newsletter carried a bittersweet update as our State Director, Jon Bittner, signed off after nearly nine years of leadership. After two decades with the Alaska SBDC, I’ve been asked to step in as Acting State Director while we search for our next leader. For those who know me, yes, this means I’ve been nudged into the spotlight, a place I usually avoid at all costs. Jon set the bar high, and while stepping in is a little intimidating, it also feels like the right place to be. I wouldn’t take this on without the support of UAA, our partners, funders, and the incredible staff who keep this work moving forward.

The good news is that our momentum hasn’t slowed. In just the past couple of weeks, and as you'll read more about below, our SSBCI program was recognized as one of the top performers in the nation, we wrapped up a successful three-part Ready to Grow workshop series in Anchorage, and partnered with Royal Caribbean to launch a small business accelerator in Seward. Many of our team have also been busy traveling to provide support across Alaska and beyond. Later this month, you’ll find us at the Alaska Federation of Natives Convention, where our SSBCI Tribal Advisory Board will meet to keep expanding capital access statewide.

What keeps me inspired through this transition is the same thing that has kept me here through the years: the determination, grit, and creativity of Alaska’s small business owners. Leadership may change, but the SBDC’s commitment to helping those businesses start, grow, and thrive is as strong as ever.

And if transitions feel a little spooky this time of year, I know there’s nothing to fear with this team; we’ve got a lot more to build and celebrate together.

In his farewell op-ed, outgoing Alaska SBDC State Director Jon Bittner makes a compelling case for why Alaska's economic future depends on supporting small businesses rather than chasing big corporate projects. Despite back-to-back recessions and the second-slowest GDP growth nationally, Alaska's 77,814 small businesses employ over half the state's workers and represent the most reliable path to economic diversification. After nearly 9 years leading the Alaska SBDC, Bittner asserts it's time to "dream small so we can grow big" by coordinating resources behind entrepreneurs launching hundreds of new businesses each year.

Alaska’s small businesses are the backbone of our communities, from Kotzebue to Ketchikan, you’re creating jobs, shaping industries, and keeping our economy moving. But running a business in Alaska takes grit, creativity, and the right support.

This October, the Alaska SBDC is highlighting key areas to help your business thrive:

Manufacturing: Boost local economies and expand your markets.

Cybersecurity: Protect your data, operations, and customer trust.

Alaska SBDC Business Programs

At the recent ASBDC Training Event in Orlando, our very own Carlos Machuca, AI Resource Program Director, and Ruth Wolfe, Rural Center Director, shared insights on Creating Custom AI Assistants with ChatGPT (GPTs) for Business Advising.

Their session highlighted how AI tools can streamline workflows, support smarter decision-making, and ultimately help advisors better serve small businesses.

We’re proud to see Alaska SBDC helping to lead the way in exploring practical, human-centered uses of AI for business development, and even more excited about the opportunities ahead as advisors nationwide tap into this potential!

👻 PSA: Don’t let cyber ghouls spook your small biz. We've got a few tips!

  • Don’t bite the phish! If it smells spooky, it’s probably a scam.

  • Beware the Wi-Fi witches. Only shop on secure connections—no haunted hotspots!

  • Summon strong passwords. Mix letters, numbers & symbols to keep the ghouls out!

The Alaska SBDC has deployed 92.5% of its State Small Business Credit Initiative (SSBCI) funds - the highest rate of any of the 131 state programs in the country.

This milestone represents more than a statistic. It reflects over $100 million invested directly into Alaska’s small businesses and communities in just under three years - and counting!

From rural restaurants opening their doors, to aircraft connecting remote communities, to theaters and construction companies expanding, these investments are creating jobs, fueling growth, and strengthening Alaska’s economy from the ground up.

We’re proud to lead the way, but even prouder of the entrepreneurs and lenders who are building a stronger, more resilient Alaska!

SSBCI Success Story

Stanley Tyler Huntington, a Tribal member from Galena Village, owns Hog River Construction . Early in 2025, he landed a critical infrastructure contract with the Chinik Eskimo Community and needed working capital to make it happen. With an 80% loan guarantee from the Alaska SBDC's Tribal SSBCI Program and Northrim Bank, Stanley was able to purchase materials, mobilize quickly, and hire local workers.

The result? Heating upgrades, cabin expansions, and a heated storage building for life-saving search and rescue equipment- all delivered on time, on budget, and with 95% local hires. Eight seasonal jobs, stronger infrastructure, and a thriving Native-owned business making a difference in rural Alaska. This is what happens when smart lending meets local commitment:
