(WILSON, N.C.) June 27, 2011 - School's out and summer's here, but not before Sallie B. Howard School recognized its hard-working students for a year well done. The annual "Oscars-themed" SBH School Academy Awards Show took place on June 9, where over a hundred trophies and certificates were handed out for excellence in various categories. Among those recognized were the 84 students who earned a four on their End-Of-Grade tests as well as the 27 students who made double and triple fours.
"It was exciting to get three fours," said eighth grader Marco-Dane Raymond who earned a four in math, science and Algebra I. "I expected good grades, but not that many fours. I was skeptical about Algebra. I'm happy I could prove to myself that I could do it."
Arts teachers gave awards for best-in-show in band, chorus, computer, dance, drama, multimedia, music, photography, physical education, science, step and visual art. Students were also recognized for having the highest grade point averages of their homerooms throughout the school year.
"I am proud of all our students who worked hard this year and distinguished themselves as leaders and scholars who are serious about their futures," said Executive Director JoAnne Woodard. "I honor our teachers who work diligently and consistently to push students to their highest levels of achievement. As a result of the dedicated work of our teachers, the consistent effort of our students and the backing of the families who support their students and the work we do at Sallie B. Howard School for the Arts, we again achieved 'high growth' on state EOG exams this year."
