Just Competitors or More?

The SBIR/STTR programs are solicitation driven. In other words, the participating agencies publish areas of need, which can be either broad or specific. It is up to the applicant to review these solicitations and decide if they should submit a proposal for a particular topic solicitation.

The Biotechnology Innovation Grant (BIG) targets university technologies entering the translational phase of development. BIG projects must include both technical and commercial development milestones. The project team is composed of a technical PI and a commercial development adviser. NC Idea Seed Grant Program
Deadline: February 26
Application opens: February 12
NC IDEA
SEED provides grant funding to innovative startups, typically between proof of concept and profitability. Since the inception of NC IDEA in 2006, NC IDEA SEED has awarded over $5 million in grant funding to 118 companies throughout the state. Nearly 70 percent of these companies are still operating today; collectively these companies have raised over $220 million in both equity and non-dilutive funding and have generated over 1,000 jobs.
Technology Enhancement Grant (TEG) Cycle 2
Deadline: Wednesday, March 21, 2018 (noon)
TEGawards are used to generate data that will directly enhance the university's licensing position for commercially promising inventions. Proposals are submitted through the university technology transfer office. The proposed project will ideally incorporate study endpoints designed to meet key milestones as defined by a potential licensee or industry-experienced technology development adviser.
