Topics for the Department of Defense’s SBIR 2020.1 and STTR 2020.A Broad Area Announcement will be pre-released on December 10. If your company is a interested in submitting a proposal, your first step is to send an Executive Summary of your project to the appropriate Technical Point of Contact (TPOC). You can find contact information for the relevant TPOC at the end of each topic and subtopic.

Email them directly and ask:
  • Does my innovation match the goals of DOD for this topic? If not, ask if they are aware of other topics within DOD they may suggest?

Explaining Your NIH Project Budget: The Budget Justification
Your budget spreadsheet tells your company’s story in numbers, but it is only half of the story. The reviewers need to see why you are spending money on the things in your budget, and it is your Budget Justification that explains what the numbers mean. 

Here are the most important things to remember are:
  • This is the only place in the proposal that really tells the reviewers who is doing what, and where they are doing it. Your Budget Justification is a valuable overview of the way the project is set up. It helps answer many questions reviewers have about your company.
  • The Budget Justification is where you explain in narrative detail how you will spend NIH’s money. This is not where you justify the project and talk about how great it is. Save that for the Research Strategy. Read on

From the moment you receive the notice of award or contract, like a first-time parent, life changes for you. From that point forward your focus now turns to managing your grant.  

Also like that of a new parent, this joyful, new circumstance entails new duties. It requires being aware of how the grant/contract dollars are going to be spent and ensuring that those expenditures are documented properly. Additionally, the grant manager must make sure that everyone in the organization is documenting his/her time and effort for the work performed, something they may not have been doing previously.
