Commission on Judicial Selection Looks to Fill Vacancy in Eighth Judicial District Court
The Commission on Judicial Selection is beginning the process to fill the vacancy in the Eighth Judicial District Court, Department 11.
 
Pursuant to Article 6, Section 20, of the Constitution of the State of Nevada, the appointment of a temporary member by the state bar to serve for the purpose of filling this vacancy is necessary. Subsection 4(c) calls for the Board of Governors of the State Bar of Nevada to appoint a temporary member of the Commission on Judicial Selection. The appointee must be a member of the state bar and reside in the judicial district in which the vacancy occurs.
 
Please submit an application no later than September 15.
This Week at the State Bar
The Nevada Board of Continuing Legal Education (MCLE Board) met last week to to review compliance statistics and the MCLE Board’s financial operations report. The board also discussed the status of the MCLE Board’s transition under the umbrella of the State Bar of Nevada.
 
The Young Lawyers Section met September 2 to discuss trial skills training, get an update on the Goldilocks Project in the Clark County School District, present an amendment to the section’s bylaws, and to nominate Ashley Biehl as an American Bar Association Star of the Quarter. 
Nevada Department of Indigent Defense Seeks Deputy Director

The deputy director performs a wide variety of administrative and support functions that enable DIDS to function effectively, With Nevada’s public defense reform efforts, this position will be tasked with addressing dynamic and challenging issues, as well as assisting the Board on Indigent Defense Services in becoming a strong resource for public defenders and counties in Nevada.
 
Applicants must be licensed to practice law in Nevada, are in the unclassified services of the state, and shall devote their entire time to their duties and shall not engage in any other gainful employment or occupation. Applicants must hold a driver’s license.

Interested applicants must submit the following: a detailed description of educational achievement and employment history, including the name and address of employers; scope of responsibility; and set forth how the minimum qualifications are met. 
Washoe County Bar Association Seeking Executive Director

The executive director is responsible for ensuring that the WCBA serves the needs and interests of the association membership pursuant to the WCBA Mission Statement, Vision, and the association’s bylaws and as directed by the five voting member executive board.

The executive director works independent of direct supervision but reports to the president and the executive director of WCBA, which is the primary policy-setting body of the association.

The executive director oversees all aspects of WCBA, including the daily operations of the organization, including maintenance of the membership database, financial management, website maintenance, scheduling upcoming events including monthly luncheons, continuing legal education and other special events.

Legal Aid Center Offers Nevada Dependency 101 CLE Course
The Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada is offering a 1.5-hour general credit CLE on Nevada dependency law in Las Vegas from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. on Monday, September 13, via webinar.

This CLE will provide an overview of child welfare law based on Chapter 432B of the Nevada Revised Statutes. Attendees will learn how court involvement starts, with a family in crisis, and ends, with permanency and stability for the child. The class provides perspectives from the bench and practice pointers on how to represent children who are parties to the case.

Other upcoming CLEs sponsored by the Legal Aid Center include:

  • Noon until 1 p.m., September 17CAP Fundamental Techniques for Advanced Representation, 1 hour of general credit; and
  • 1-3:30 p.m., September 29 – Basics of Family Law, 3.5 hours of general credits.

All attendees who volunteer to assist with a pro bono matter or volunteer for two Ask-A-Lawyer programs will be able to attend this course at no charge and receive CLE credit. Please visit Legal Aid Center’s website to select a case or sign up for an Ask-A-Lawyer program prior to the training.
