Nevada Lawyer Explores 2025 Nevada Legislature in February Issue

Interested in how the 2025 Nevada Legislature may change the laws affecting your practice? Want to get more involved in the legislative process? The February issue of Nevada Lawyer magazine has all the information you need, from a preview of legislative bill draft requests to contact information for every legislator in the state.

 

The issue also contains a recap of the Las Vegas Chapter of the National Bar Association’s annual Scholarship & Awards Gala.

This Week at the State Bar

The Eighth Judicial District Court’s Civil Bench Bar Meeting will be held at noon on Tuesday, February 11, in Courtroom D or via Zoom

The State Bar of Nevada’s Standing Committee on Ethics and Professional Responsibility has drafted a formal opinion and is seeking comments from attorneys. The deadline to submit feedback is noon on Saturday, February 15

The State Bar of Nevada is searching for two attorney coaches to mentor new Mock Trial teams at Desert Oasis and Liberty high schools in Las Vegas. For information, e-mail CLE Director Eric Johnson at ericj@nvbar.org.

Tax Law Section Holding Inaugural Specialization Exam

The State Bar of Nevada’s Tax Law Section’s Specialization Board is opening applications for the 2025 inaugural board-certified specialization in Tax Law Exam.

 

The Tax Law Specialization Board will offer the exam on the morning of May 3, in both Las Vegas and Reno. The exam will take approximately three hours to complete.

 

Anyone interested in sitting for the exam is asked to submit their application online. There is an application fee of $500. The deadline to apply is Tuesday, April 1.

Eighth Judicial District Court Announces Probate Assignments

The Eighth Judicial District Court (EJDC) issued Administrative Order 25-01, announcing that as of January 27, all probate cases in the EJDC shall be evenly split between the two probate commissioners. Starting February 24, probate calendars shall be heard twice weekly, with Commissioner Russel Geist presiding on Wednesdays and Commissioner James Fontana presiding on Fridays. Dates and times are subject to change as necessity requires.

 

Fontano’s department shall be designated PC-1 and Geist’ s department shall be designated PC-2. All pleadings and other papers shall include in the caption the correct department number, followed by the probate commissioner’s department number in parentheses. The inbox for matters in department PC- I shall be probateinbox@clarkcountycourts.us and the inbox for matters in department PC-2 shall be probate2inbox@clarkcountycourts.us. Department inboxes are only to be used for submitting documents for the court’s signature.

Legal Aid Center Hosting Child Abuse CLE

The Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada (LASCN) is hosting CLE titled “Introduction to Representing Children in Abuse & Neglect Cases from 1 p.m. until 3 p.m. on Thursday, February 20, online via GoTo Meeting. The CLE is designed to help attendees learn how to effectively represent foster care children.

 

In Nevada, children are parties to an abuse/neglect case brought by a child welfare agency. Under Nevada law, those children have a right to be represented by an attorney. Attorneys from the Children’s Attorneys Project (CAP) will teach attendees how to establish an attorney/client relationship with clients of all ages. The class will also provide an overview of the child welfare system and the life of an abuse/neglect case. The class will also touch upon common issues, including sibling connections, mental health, and delayed permanency.

CLEAR Wants Input in Attorney, Law Student Survey

The Conference of Chief Justices (CCJ) and Conference of State Court Administrators (COSCA) want to hear from law students and practicing attorneys across the country about their law school and legal experience. This survey will close on Friday, February 21.

 

Respondents’ perspectives will help inform the Committee on Legal Education and Education Reform (CLEAR) as it works to develop recommendations to improve bar admissions, ensure practice readiness of newly admitted attorneys, and pathways into public service.


This survey is anonymous, and respondents’ identities and responses will not be shared. This survey should take between 15-20 minutes, and responses will be saved if you exit before completion.

Senior Law Program Hosting Free CLE

The Southern Nevada Senior Law Program is offering a free one-hour general credit CLE titled “Elder Abuse & Exploitation: Recognition, Reporting & Response.” The course will provide a general overview of what constitutes elder abuse, neglect, and exploitation, who is required to report it, how to report it, and a remedial response for the practitioner. 


This CLE will be held at noon on Thursday, February 20, at the Southern Nevada Senior Law Program’s office and via Zoom.

Featured CLE: Financial Statements and Other Things That Don’t Add Up

The Bankruptcy Section is hosting a CLE titled “Financial Statements, Monthly Operating Reports and Other Things That Don’t Add up.”

 

Instructors Edward Burr, Bert Larsen, and James Patrick Shea will provide an overview of how to decipher information contained in financial statements, monthly operating reports, and other commonly used financial documents.
