Nevada Supreme Court, Court of Appeals Honor Top 10 Volunteers

The top volunteer from each of the top 10 State Bar of Nevada practice area sections that participated in the 2024 Section Pro Bono Challenge joined members of the Nevada Supreme Court and Nevada Court of Appeals for a recognition luncheon at the James W. Hardesty Nevada Supreme Court building in Las Vegas on September 6.

 

Nevada Supreme Court Justices Kristina Pickering and Lydia Stiglich, co-chairs of the Access to Justice Commission, were joined by State Bar of Nevada Immediate Past President Julie Cavanaugh-Bill in presenting recognition certificates.

 

The top 10 volunteers from the top 10 sections are:

 

  • LGBTQ+ – Bonnie Smith;
  • Bankruptcy – Sean Patterson;
  • Family Law – Robert Cerceo;
  • Probate and Trust – Carmen Avello;
  • Public Lawyers – Homa Woodrum;

This Week at the State Bar

The State Bar of Nevada is looking for qualified individuals to fill open positions on the Functional Equivalency Committee. The committee investigates bar applicants who graduate from non-ABA accredited law schools to determine if the applicant’s education and work experience is functionally equivalent to an ABA-accredited law school’s education, and if so, certify the applicant to sit for the bar examination. The application deadline is September 30, 2024.

The State Bar of Nevada is looking for qualified individuals (attorneys and non-attorneys) from both the south and north to fill open positions on the Fee Dispute Arbitration Committee. The application deadline is Friday, September 20.

The State Bar of Nevada is accepting applications for a full-time outreach and programs specialist. Please submit a cover letter and resume, references, salary requirements and completed company application to hraccounting@nvbar.org.

Eighth Judicial District Court Designates 3 Election-Day Judges

The Eighth Judicial District Court issued Administrative Order 24-07 extending hours of operation and designating three district court judges to serve on a special committee designated to individually preside on a randomly generated rotational basis over any election-related actions filed beginning at 7 a.m. on Tuesday, November 5, and ending at midnight on Wednesday, November 6, to ensure fair and expeditious resolution of all election-related actions filed on Election Day.

Court of Appeals, Federal Bar, State Bar Hosting CLE in October

The U.S. Court of Appeals for the Ninth Circuit, the Nevada Chapter of the Federal Bar Association, and the State Bar of Nevada are sponsoring a free CLE titled “The Art of Appellate Advocacy: A View from the Ninth Circuit Bench,” from 2-4 p.m. on Tuesday, October 8, in the jury assembly room at the Lloyd D. George U.S. Courthouse in Las Vegas. There will also be a Zoom option.


Ninth Circuit judges who will be sitting in October, and Susan V. Gelmis, chief deputy clerk for operations, will present on effective brief writing and oral argument, give an insider’s guide to Ninth Circuit Practice, and update attendees on recent policy changes.

 

A reception will immediately follow the program.

The CLE will offer 1.5 credits for State Bar of Nevada licensees.

Applications Available for Vacancy in First Judicial District

Governor Joe Lombardo announced the retirement of the Honorable James T. Russell from the First Judicial District Court of Nevada, Department 1. Russell will retire at the end of October 2024.


The Commission on Judicial Selection will convene to fill the forthcoming vacancy left by Russell’s retirement. Applications are due by noon on Thursday, September 19.


Applicants interested in applying must contact Margarita Bautista at mbautista@nvcourts.nv.gov to receive the required application materials.

Legal Aid Center Hosting CLE on Custody Issues in Tribal Courts 

The Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada (LASCN) is hosting Power Act CLE – Custody Issues in Tribal Courts from noon until 1 p.m. on Tuesday, September 24, in the Engelstad Family Classroom and via Go To Meeting.


The discussion will explore the history of tribal courts, tribal jurisdiction over nontribal members, and remedies of tribal courts. Procedures for domestic violence cases include jurisdictional issues between tribal and state courts, full faith and credit issues, waiver of jurisdiction, transferring venue, Indian Child Welfare Act, enforcement issues, and steps of a domestic violence matter in tribal courts. The event will close with a policy discussion.

Legal Aid Center Seeks Volunteers for Urgent Cases

The pro bono year for the Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada ends on September 30, and the organization has several urgent cases that need volunteers. If any attorney can take one case, please email the assistant director of the Pro Bono Project Genevieve Galman at ggalman@lacsn.org.

Las Vegas National Bar Association Seeks Workshop Volunteers

The Las Vegas National Bar Association (LVNBA) is partnering with state Senator Dina Neal, the Black Law Students Association (BLSA), and community partners to help teach local youth about their constitutional rights and how to navigate interactions with law enforcement at the 16th annual Youth & Justice Forum from 9 a.m. until 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, September 14, at Democracy Prep at 1201 W. Lake Mead Blvd. in Las Vegas.


Attorney volunteers are still needed to assist in role-playing skits with students and law enforcement, and teaching students about their constitutional rights.

Featured CLE: 2024 Nevada Government Civil Attorneys Conference

The Public Lawyers Section of the State Bar of Nevada is hosting its annual Nevada Government Civil Attorneys Conference from October 9-11 in South Lake Tahoe.

 

The cost is $100 for section members, and $499 for non-section members.

 

The registration fee includes all conference materials, a snack on Wednesday, breakfast, lunch, and a snack on Thursday, and breakfast Friday. The conference will feature approximately 13 hours of CLE presentations (including substance abuse and ethics), and the Public Lawyers Section annual breakfast meeting.
