Participating in Section Pro Bono Challenge Offers Many Benefits

The State Bar of Nevada’s Section Pro Bono Challenge can make a difference for someone in need and accrue these personal benefits for participating attorneys:

This Week at the State Bar

The State Bar of Nevada’s Standing Committee on Ethics and Professional Responsibility has drafted a formal opinion and is seeking comments from attorneys. The deadline to submit feedback is noon on Saturday, February 15

The State Bar of Nevada’s Tax Law Section’s Specialization Board is opening applications for the 2025 inaugural board-certified specialization in Tax Law Exam. Anyone interested in sitting for the exam is asked to submit their application online. There is an application fee of $500. The deadline to apply is Tuesday, April 1. Questions? Reminder: New NRAP Amendments Available Online

The Nevada Supreme Court amended the Nevada Rules of Appellate Procedure, and those changes went into effect on August 15, 2024. To help learn the changes, the new rules are still available online. Attached to the order as Exhibit A is a redline of the revised NRAP against the existing NRAP. A clean copy of the revised NRAP is attached as Exhibit B.

 

The court ordered that these amended rules should control when conflicts arise between these amended rules and any other court rules. Time frames accruing before the effective date of these amended rules shall be calculated using the unamended rules. Time frames accruing on or after the effective date of these amended rules shall be calculated under these amended rules.

LVNBA Hosting Black History Month Events

The Las Vegas Chapter of the National Bar Association (LVNBA) is inviting State Bar of Nevada licensees to participate in its Black History Month programming and events.

 

This year’s events include:

 

  • Tuesday, February 18: LVNBA Reception from 6-8 p.m. at Ballard Spahr. RSVP for free. 
  • Wednesday, February 26: Pathways to Bench Panel (LVNBA Sponsored Event) from 12:30-2:20 p.m. at Lloyd D. George U.S. Courthouse.
  • Friday, February 28: LVNBA Members Movie Night – Captain America: A Brave New World – details to be announced.

PILA Hosting Annual Silver State Auction February 27

The Public Interest Law Association (PILA) at UNLV’s William S. Boyd School of Law is hosting its 26th Silver State Auction from 6-9 p.m. Thursday, February 27, at the Thomas & Mack Strip View Pavilion.

 

The auction recognizes community leaders and raises summer scholarships for students pursuing public interest work. The event includes a sit-down dinner for all attendees, drinks, a silent and live auction, sponsored by the Vegas Golden Knights, Las Vegas Raiders, Blue Man Group, Topgolf, and more.

 

This year’s honorees include Bryan Scott, the first African American city attorney for Las Vegas; Ellie Roohani, a human trafficking survivors’ rights attorney; the Legal Aid Center of Southern Nevada’s Pro Bono Department; Professor Bret Birdsong; Sydney Szostek from the Kids’ Court School Foundation; and Professor Ozzie Fumo.

Nominations Open for Liberty Bell Award

The Clark County Law Foundation is now accepting nominations for the 2025 Liberty Bell Award. The award will be presented to the recipient(s) during a ceremony from 2-3 p.m. on Friday, May 2, at the Historic Fifth Street School, located at 401 South 4th Street, Las Vegas, Nevada, 89101.

 

The recipient of the award is an individual in the community who upholds the rule of law, contributes to good government within the community, stimulates a sense of civic responsibility, and encourages respect for the law in the courts. The recipient’s contribution should speak to the mission of Clark County Law Foundation, which is to "empower Nevada, especially our youth, through education, outreach and service."

 

Nomination criteria include:

  • Promotes a better understanding of the U.S. Constitution and Bill of Rights;
  • Encourages greater respect for the law and the courts;
  • Stimulates a deeper sense of individual responsibility so citizens recognize their duties as well as their rights;
  • Contributes to the effective functioning of our governmental institutions; and
  • Fosters a better understanding and appreciation of the law.

 

Nominations should consist of the following:

  • The nominee's first and last name, address, and phone number; and
  • A concise overview of the individual or organization, detailing their significant contributions to the community and how they fulfill the above criteria. The description should also highlight any organizations nominees are presently engaged with and their specific contributions to these entities.

Featured CLE: Financial Statements and Other Things That Don’t Add Up

The Bankruptcy Section is hosting a CLE titled “Financial Statements, Monthly Operating Reports and Other Things That Don’t Add up.”

 

Instructors Edward Burr, Bert Larsen, and James Patrick Shea will provide an overview of how to decipher information contained in financial statements, monthly operating reports, and other commonly used financial documents.
