Welcome to the April edition of SBP Discoveries. Read on to learn more about our research, people and events that illustrate our commitment to advancing science to improve human health.

We hope that you will consider attending our next speaker series, “SBP Insights: Alzheimer’s Disease” on June 5th, and our Center Open House on June 14th. Both events are opportunities to learn more about how research can change the future of medicine.

How fat tissue shunts energy to tumors

Obesity is known to be a major risk factor for prostate cancer and predicts how aggressively the cancer will behave. But it has not been clear how obesity contributes to tumor formation. A new study by Maria Diaz-Meco, Ph.D., and Jorge Moscat, Ph.D., published in Cancer Cell, looks at how cancer derives fuel from fat cells and describes a potential approach to starve tumors of nutrition.

How can prebiotics help your gut health?

Words like microbiome, gut health, and probiotics are now part of our common vocabulary. But, little has been mentioned about “prebiotics”. Scott Peterson, Ph.D., recently worked with UC San Diego and The Chopra Foundation to assess the prebiotic effects of herbs commonly used in Ayurvedic medicine—a system practiced in India for more than 5,000 years.

Evan Snyder elected to Association of American Physicians

Evan Y. Snyder, M.D., Ph.D., professor and founding director of the Center for Stem Cells and Regenerative Medicine at SBP, was elected to the Association of American Physicians—a prestigious national society of physician-scientists who have made important scientific discoveries that have impacted human health.

EVENTS

New San Diego study shows mounting toll of Alzheimer's disease

Civic leaders, including Mayor Kevin Faulconer, Dianne Jacob and Kristin Gaspar, came to our campus to announce the results of a new study on the impact of Alzheimer's disease in San Diego and to celebrate an NIH grant awarded to SBP scientists. The grant stems from research funded by San Diego's “Collaboration4Cure (C4C)” and a gift from Stuart and Karen Tanz.

Bring It! Fundraiser Rocks it for Research

More than 300 SBP supporters attended a space-themed fundraiser at the Del Mar Fairgrounds on April 19. Guests played trivia challenges, competed in out-of-this-world games and entered an “Honorary Padres for a Day” raffle. Proceeds support scientific research at our Institute.

SBP Insights: Alzheimer’s Disease

SBP Insights will bring together a scientist, physician and caregiver to share their unique perspectives on current treatments and promising research that may lead to better patient healthcare. We hope you can attend this interactive panel discussion on June 5, 2018.

SBP Cancer Center Open House

Join us for a guided tour of SBP’s NCI-designated Cancer Center and see how our scientists view cancer. Register for our open house event, "Seeing is Believing: Cancer Imaging" on June 14, 2018.
