New research could help identify people with a deadly form of colorectal cancer

Scientists are learning that serrated colorectal cancer is deadlier than other subtypes. However, development of an effective treatment has been hindered by the lack of a diagnostic test. Now, Jorge Moscat, Ph.D., and Maria Diaz-Meco, Ph.D., have uncovered potential biomarkers that could identify patients with this type of cancer, and a drug combination that has treated the cancer in mice. The study published in Immunity.

Parents gain answers about their child’s mysterious condition

For the parents of a six-year-old Hispanic boy and a seven-year-old Qatari girl, answers remained elusive. Both children had alarming symptoms, including developmental delays, seizures and “floppy baby syndrome.” But the disease's origin remained unknown despite doctors' best efforts. Now, these families have answers thanks to Hudson Freeze, Ph.D., whose team determined that a malfunctioning enzyme called fucokinase is to blame.
